BUT, I DO have Dark Cornish, over white rocks, and Dark Cornish, over Buckeyes, AND Midget White Turkeys, half a freezer of the processed birds and the half of red salmon...so yeah, we are eating good in the neighborhood.
So..that is why I have these "yard candy" icelandics..and maybe get some seremas....

Still, I think he's blow a gasket if I got anymore birds.
I would have brought ALOT of birds to Stevenson, tried last show, but it involves a motel, and we cannot afford to do that right now as we are building a house, CASH, while living in a cabin the size of an RV.
Monroe & Chehalis allow us to do the day & drive home.
Sorry!
But we did have fun, and the Stevenson show looked well organized, & clean!
The sale barn was great!!!
Good job to all who worked on the show.
And what a gorgeous drive, the scenery & weather were added awesome!!!!!!

Come spring time we need to do some icelandic egg trading. i only have like ~6 (great hatch rate of 19/24 but the chick feed killed most of them off in a few weeks) if i counted right and i need more genetic diversity..... mine came from Mack Hill.

?? i didn't mention this in june? the chicks were strong and healthy the first 3 weeks but then suddenly they started to not have their wings grow, they became soft... and over a few days their bones became too soft for them to walk. many died overnight and my boyfriend culled the others that showed the first signs because we knew there was nothing to cure them.... so after a great hatch i had a handful that were resistant to whatever was killing them. i assumed it was the feed and the breed was sensitive to it because i had other breeds of chicks in the brooder that were younger and were healthy.

Haven't had to deal with it much YET with the chickens but when we had the goats kidding season was always exciting and any loss was always hard. I to always said it never gets any easier to lose them. There may even be rumor of a (pre) masked man doing mouth to snout on new borns.

Eeeek!

I'm 60+ pages behind! I need a summary of the best posts.

I have dreaded EGG EATERS, LOTS OF THEM!

I was averaging about a dozen eggs a day ffrom 17-18 layers, then, about a week ago, I spotted raccoons and bears in my yard, so I locked the chickens in the coop and runs. I suspected some of the newer girls were laying and hiding in the yard, so I was excited to go out and count eggs the first day locked in: 3. Next day 2. The roosters hop on the bars in fron of the nesting boxes and hang out whenever a hen goes in, then the bust the egss open and call everyone over to enjoy the snack!

After 2 days of no free-ranging, I let the birds out again, but it has not helped any with egg production unless I happen to be home and beat the roosters to the nest box to grab the warm eggs.

We did build the boxes to be roll-out,so I am going to cut up an old yoga mat, and finally put it to use. I'll pull out all the egg-soaked shredded paper from the boxes so the eggs can roll away.

Any other suggestions?

So maybe I drive OVER THERE come spring?
I have a gal pal in Ardinvoir/Entait I need to visit...and maybe the 3 of us can meet up at Rocky Reach park or someplace & bring our cull/extras and trade straight across??
What do ya say Jake?

My dad has told me often enough, a farmer has to be big hearted, a veterinarian, and a a mortician, all at the same time.
"Farming ain't for the squeemish", I think someone famous said that, Mark Twain?

And that was, such a beautiful baby goat!

Haller, when you get some, you can come trade too!

BUTT chick feed does not kill off birds, unless it is mouldy, infested with bugs or whatnot...........fermented?
Chick feed never kills off birds.
Poor handling of chick feed does.
Keep it dry, away from vermine.
I keep mine in garbage cans, sealed rubbermaid types.
