BUTT chick feed does not kill off birds, unless it is mouldy, infested with bugs or whatnot...........fermented?
Chick feed never kills off birds.
Poor handling of chick feed does.
Keep it dry, away from vermine.
I keep mine in garbage cans, sealed rubbermaid types.

well the other chicks in the brooder weren't affected. I assumed because this breed has been so isolated that it wasn't used to the highly concentrated diet that other birds have evolved with... Icelandics did survive on dung heaps...... So i figured either it was the medication in the feed or they were either getting too much or were come how deficient in something. because i haven't heard of a disease that causes bones to soften.... i mean i could bend the chicks wings UPWARDS. it freaked me out. I also haven't heard of anyone else who has birds from the line i have had this happen. It could have been a disease of some sort.... they also didn't have the advantage of evolving with all the other avian diseases.... so yeah.. I have been looking in my spare time in the few poultry texts in the vet. library here at WSU but nothing has fit quite right. I keep thinking excess of deficiency...

Mine are doing great, had a bout of what I saw & thought was wry tail at 4 months of age, but looks like it is just a growth spurt in the large tail feathers they grow, and still have juvenile musculature.
In chick fed, what do you include?
I raised mine on 20% with Corrid added to the water.
Now they have been on free range (which they prefer) and 16%, no corrid.
I have had no issues of weak bones.
Where did you get yours??????????????
I also wanted to talk to you about the white cheddar WSU is making out there, I want a bunch!!!

So was I but I DO NOT want it to become twisted to look like Cloverleaf has or sold me bad birds. This was not intended to be about the quality of her birds I was just having (too much) fun with it. Sorry

You know, I may not have much to say most of the time, but I like reading the posts and feeling like I am apart of the conversation and this group. With that said, reading some of the comments about a difference of opinion is disconcerting. It is so hard to convey tone and emotion in text form. So it wold be great if we could remember that and be understanding of each others differences of opinions an perceptions. And that we may be "reading" more into what is said than is really there. And getting needlessly upset. This is just my opinion and I have misconstrued tone and meaning of posts before so I am talking from experience.

Going to go to bed now, didn't get much sleep last night.

Hi all...I know you all mentioned this before, but is DE what you use for mite prevention for birds? And is it necessary for winter time use or just summer??
I am dealing with some severe sunburn itchy skin and the thought of bird mites crossed my mind.

Thankfully it is not, but what a horrible thought? Bird bites can live on human skin!!

AKA swimmer's itch.

And they are very hard to get rid of once they are in the house.

Whatever it was, you were not there, correct?
You were at school?
Whatever the case, I sure do NOT want to introduce "this" to my flock, however, I may be able to trade you any cull birds I will have from my flock......

Here is the primary difference.

I made a broad statement "The show disappointed me"

You made a very specific statement: "You are part of the problem"

My statement is based on my expectations based against my observations. Your's is based on .. what exactly?

I really hate chicken snobs.

enough;)

Gotcha

I am changing my mind a trip to the feed store and lunch sound much more fun. By the time I'm back the meds should be kicked in, and I should be good to go. There is so much for me to get get done out there in that back yard.

Un-related thoughts

I looked up my house on Google earth last night, and I realized that the picture of the house is current enough that the new patio in back yard shows up. I thought that was really cool until I checked out the front view of the house. As I looked around I spotted the neighbors daughters, being nearly mauled by one of my cats. It cracked me up.

This post was written shortly after the post I made at about 2:30pm today. I figure that I put enough effort into it that I may as well post it, even though I never did go to the feed store or have lunch. But that is another story.......

just to add to the "experience at the shows"

DH and I had a blast at Monroe ... we loved looking at all the fowl, we were amazed at the diversity, we laughed at some of the antics they showed; we loved meeting other BYCers

maybe it's easier to enjoy shows when you don't know that much about the fancy

or when you go in with the attitude of observing and learning everything, rather than concentrating on your own narrower interests

wish I'd had the ability to go to Stevenson ... but maybe someday

however, don't ask me to show ! since my preference is for EEs ... which don't qualify as "a breed" in the minds of the governing bodies

so under one definition, I am "part of the problem" ... I just am not carping nor criticizing the shows ... I know I'll enjoy what I see

hey, we both thoroughly enjoyed our one trip down to the Chehalis auction ... beautiful birds, a strange assortment, and a moment of suspense and humor

(the homing pigeon who flew the coop)

I don't see what that has to do with the point I was trying to make.

So you're passionate about bird shows. That's great. It seems that you are offended by someone being unimpressed, as if they're unimpressed with your efforts. I don't think anyone meant to belittle your efforts...but not everyone will end up being passionate about bird shows or all breeds of birds. There are a wide range of bird owners here. We don't all get excited about bird shows. It's nothing against you personally. The responses you have been giving sound very defensive.

(That said, the comments about avoiding all showing seemed a little snarky)
