well the other chicks in the brooder weren't affected. I assumed because this breed has been so isolated that it wasn't used to the highly concentrated diet that other birds have evolved with... Icelandics did survive on dung heaps...... So i figured either it was the medication in the feed or they were either getting too much or were come how deficient in something. because i haven't heard of a disease that causes bones to soften.... i mean i could bend the chicks wings UPWARDS. it freaked me out. I also haven't heard of anyone else who has birds from the line i have had this happen. It could have been a disease of some sort.... they also didn't have the advantage of evolving with all the other avian diseases.... so yeah.. I have been looking in my spare time in the few poultry texts in the vet. library here at WSU but nothing has fit quite right. I keep thinking excess of deficiency...

Mine are doing great, had a bout of what I saw & thought was wry tail at 4 months of age, but looks like it is just a growth spurt in the large tail feathers they grow, and still have juvenile musculature.
In chick fed, what do you include?
I raised mine on 20% with Corrid added to the water.
Now they have been on free range (which they prefer) and 16%, no corrid.
I have had no issues of weak bones.
Where did you get yours??????????????
I also wanted to talk to you about the white cheddar WSU is making out there, I want a bunch!!!

I can arrange something about cheese.
I was using Purina medicated chow.
Once then i was desperate and switched to just scratch mixed with layena and they reversed. yes i know i risked their kidneys... but what other choice did i have? it worked.
now at 4 months they are now smaller than my 8 week olds... i know they grow slow but i feel that they had a stunted growth. the smallest hen is now the size of my milli fleur rooster.

Need some EEs for company?

Nah, I'm fine, they're fine, cute little buggers...

I have a pip tomorrow, thanks!
This little #$@$% was the product of a fertility test....out of 8, and at 10 days I set more, so brothers & sisters will be here tomorrow.
HOWEVER I now have a beautiful white Silky in the brooder pen...and the woman that wanted it tells me she does not want it after all,, so..............Silky hen has to go!
She is gorgeous, so quiet & beautiful...but IN MY WAY!!
That is why this little #$%$$# chick is in the cabin in a cat crate!!!
ARGGH!!!

Are you guys still pipping?
Isn't it too cold to set the babies out when it is time to join the big birds?
I am just eating mine now & waiting till feb at least before I think about pip...
I wait 2 days before I collect eggs.
6 to 7 eggs...Bigger bang for buck.

Our kids did concrete floors with a dark stain to finish. They thought with kids and animals it was a good idea. I think it's awfully cold, but if they'd planned ahead they could have installed radiant heat and it would have been really cozy! Interesting note... they're putting heating pipes in the new barn they're building! Maybe the plan was to keep the kids and pets in the barn!

This sound like very good planning on their part. I can appreciate the convenience of housing the children in the barn.

Hey girlfriend!! Where have you been to get a sunburn?
big_smile.png
How are the cinnamons doing? How many quackers do you have now? Did I send you the text about Blackie (from 1 of your eggs) started laying!?

Some had a good time some did not. That is not unusual. I would encourage anybody who was disappointed to try at least one more show. Also to all dont be afraid to get involved and help. Maybe in the future we (yes I am including myself) could try using some of them funny face things so peeps knows better how we feels.

Cayuga ducks lay BLACK EGGS.... then later blue.... then white... one bird 3 colors in a year.

Oooooohhhhh!!!!!!! Now I almost want duckies. I love the color of Cayugas' too. I just hate the mess part, and what would you bet that only one duck would hatch, and that I would end up with a duck that wants to sleep in my bed?

Monroe show is typically smaller than Stevenson, and although this show was smaller than the typical Stevenson fall show it was still bigger, I believe, than Monroe.

What I like about the Stevenson show is a) location b) the people, they are GREAT and c) willingness to try new things and work towards bettering the show, as witnessed this show by a capon class, ring runner judging, table turkey judging and table serama judging.

C'est la vie. I really enjoyed the show.

Whatever it was, you were not there, correct?
You were at school?
Whatever the case, I sure do NOY want to introduce "this" to my flock, however, I may be able to trade you any cull birds I will have from my flock......

No this was was after classes ended. I hatched them at the beginning of june. Thats why i was trying to figure it out.
No other birds have been sick since then. So i have been trying to find literature about the effects of not enough or too much nutrients in their feed.
