Our spring behind our cabin is dry too...usually has lots flowing...but, it is just running low with less water, and still runs underground in a few places.

I do know that when you poke a stake in the ground, there is only resistance for the first 16" after that its super soft, and sinks very easily into the ground.
I know my mothers property used to be a revine. Back in "I want to say the 50's or so" the ravine was filled in with large cedar stumps, other woodland debre, rock and dirt... You can see spots in the field that are slowly settleing and creating low spots where water pools up to 8" deep.
Well there you go.
Chances are that the spring used to perk up up the hill & run down through the now covered ravine..........same thing here.
