That is wonderful news! After reading your first post, I was afraid to look the next day. All sounds far better than anyone could have expected from those injuries. I hope the good news continues.

Have you put fake eggs or golf balls on the nest boxes? And have you tried to put them up on the roost just after they go in? You could also try keeping them locked in the coop until later in the morning. Just throwing ideas out there. I would start with showing them how to roost at night. One problem at a time!

Why is roosting important?

I suppose it't not really, but I like being able to clean up the poop under the roosts. When they snuggle in the corner it can be messier because they lay in it especially as they get bigger and their poop gets bigger. Just my experience.

yes the blue bands I am guessing are boys. I marked them because of the 5...2 developed/grew wing feather right away. I guessed these as female. They also grew tail feathers and (because I can't remember what they are called) little feathers on their shoulders. That was on 2...so I guessed them as female. The 3 I am believing are male are all in the same area of "feather production".

It is funny because when they were only a few days old I posted photos asking. Said it was something to watch. So I marked the "boys" to see what would happen. they are fun.

I am sorry for your DD cochin. It is relly hard on kids. I hope you find the perfect one for her.

We are cautiously excited! The house we want to buy is empty and the owners said we could rent till the deal closes in case ours closes fast. Everything is falling into place but we are still cautious!
By the way, I love the joke in your signature!

Wow! Good knews Broody! Prayers!!

Here's another newbie question. Is there any reason that the coop has to be shut at night? I guess it will help keep heat in a bit as it gets colder...but I'm not too worried about them being cold (yet). And until I get some metal latches put on the coop doors, it's probably just as easy (if not moreso) for a raccoon to open the coop as it would be for any critters to dig into the run. I forgot to shut them in one night, and I was momentarily surprised to see them running around outside the next morning. Even with the later mornings, they're up before me.

Well unless you think they will visit the neighbors, mine are out in the pasture and have outside roosts right now, so unless your afraid of them being attacked then I think it's ok!

I havnt closed my coop in so long... I believe the last time I closed it was when I first put the flock in there. And that was just so they would figure out that THAT was home and not the old coop. Now though, I leave it open, but it is completely surounded and covered in wire, with an 18" apron run along the outside. Plus Chickieladys pokey no climb barbs! I havn't had an issue yet. Now when our temps really dip below freezing, say consistantly in the 20's, then I'll close up for the nights. Just to hold some extra heat in.

Sorry CL I ment CloverLeaf, I was so shook up when I read that, I have nightmares about this all the time. my brother get wood and hunts in the Blue MT.s for many yrs, that beetle killed wood up there can just be deadly, I worry about it all the time.

Yes it can be deadly, but the worst is the ones with needles still on that can catch wind & twist...I bring my own wood hunt camp....Beetle kill is great for firewood though, as all the sap has sunk to the bottom of the tree.
I LOVE pitchwood, sticky & full of hardened sap, great for starting a fire.
That & good dry cedar, nothing else compares.
