Why is roosting important?

I suppose it't not really, but I like being able to clean up the poop under the roosts. When they snuggle in the corner it can be messier because they lay in it especially as they get bigger and their poop gets bigger. Just my experience.

Here's another newbie question. Is there any reason that the coop has to be shut at night? I guess it will help keep heat in a bit as it gets colder...but I'm not too worried about them being cold (yet). And until I get some metal latches put on the coop doors, it's probably just as easy (if not moreso) for a raccoon to open the coop as it would be for any critters to dig into the run. I forgot to shut them in one night, and I was momentarily surprised to see them running around outside the next morning. Even with the later mornings, they're up before me.

Now when our temps really dip below freezing, say consistantly in the 20's, then I'll close up for the nights. Just to hold some extra heat in.

Sorry CL I ment CloverLeaf, I was so shook up when I read that, I have nightmares about this all the time. my brother get wood and hunts in the Blue MT.s for many yrs, that beetle killed wood up there can just be deadly, I worry about it all the time.

Yes it can be deadly, but the worst is the ones with needles still on that can catch wind & twist...I bring my own wood hunt camp....Beetle kill is great for firewood though, as all the sap has sunk to the bottom of the tree.
I LOVE pitchwood, sticky & full of hardened sap, great for starting a fire.
That & good dry cedar, nothing else compares.
