I think I may have to get me some WHITE EGG LAYERS just so I can have eggs in the winter! (I'll need to dye them so DH won't know!)

Didn't you know that brown eggs are just dyed white ones?

Please point it out to me when you are there!

Sure will, IF I can find everyone - will they all be hanging around your wheelchair and table?

Heads up!

I will be wearing blue jeans, and a gray T shirt with a Raven on the front & says "Raven Lunatic"

How's that???
I have short to the shoulder gray-blonde hair...glasses & no chin .....

I noticed that I am developing a white skunk stripe on the left side, although may be hard to see unless I am fresh outta the shower~~~~~~~

For the raffle I have accumulated:
2 water color paintings, small landscape types, not my big wildlife ones..
and a caramel apple candle from cinnebon (YUMMY!)
and a suet feeder & 2 cakes
and a hum bird feeder (fill from the top and has food packet!)
and I asked DH to find a manly thing to donate & he picked a nice tape measure any man would be glad to have!
I am still looking around the cabin..........

Sounds like everyone is packing up for tomorrow. Wish I could be there, but we have a party at dh's boss' home we have to go to. At least I get to get my hair foiled and done for the party, so I guess it's all good.

Today, I got up my nerve and picked up two of my hens--remember I have only had them three months and they are pretty flighty, and basically, I am scared of them, lol. Well, the splash had tiny brownish red bugs on her skin, on her back. I nearly freaked! Didn't see any on the Light Sussex and was too afraid of the huge black Orp to pick her up (if I could even catch her). So I researched this and have decided they must be lice.

Now I have five children, plus some foster children, and I have never had lice at my house! This is extremely distressing to me! I had read about lice and mites, but figured if I never took my chickens to shows, and used my DE, I might not ever have to deal with them. But now I do! Dang it! I am just not good with these things! I came in the house and showered, washed my hair and all my clothes, lol, and I still think I itch! And everything I have read seems to contradict everything else. My Chickens for Dummies book says mites are microscopic and you can't see them, but on the web I saw people tell what they look like. That is why I concluded they were lice, because I could see two of them running around and they were fast. A chart I saw said mites were slow (but if they're microscopic, how would you know?)

Anyways, the treatments for lice seems to be quite varied. Way too many opinions for me to know who to believe. So I come to you all, here in WA and ask, what do I do now? I am leaning towards Sevin, but do I really have to do the three birds and my whole 8 x 10 coop? Good heavens, that will take me all day! Is it a powder? I figure the "powder in a garbage bag method" that I read about here is what I will have to do, but my chickens are WILD! I have no idea how I will get them to go along with this idea. I know I cannot do this alone. So I have to hope my husband will be willing to help.

After I found the lice, I went to the pharmacy for my daughter who has CP. Her Medicaid coverage is all screwed up and they won't cover her $175 seizure med. I made 3 phone calls and everyone was clueless. Then I went to three stores looking for red gumdrops to finish a homemade gifts project, and no one has any! And I made my own cocoa mix for the gifts and it's not very good. And I got everything to make Bailey's and couldn't find any nice bottles for it. I think I am going to run away....

Thank you for your opinions on how to treat lice. I sure hope you all agree, lol.

Everybody going to the show have fun, good luck and please share photos for those of us who can't go. Maybe I will get to meet you all at the next show.

Chickens4gramma,

Eprinex works great and also worms them. It's systemic like the dog flea drops you apply to the back of the neck. Eprinex is applied topically to the same place on a chicken. I put them between my knees and part the feathers and get it right on the skin. Most say 1/2 ml for Large Fowl and 1/4 ml for bantam. Use a syringe (without the needle). The good thing is too that there is no egg withdrawel which means you don't have to dump the eggs. You can use Ivermectin also but you will need to toss the eggs for a few weeks. I bought my Eprinex at Dells in the cattle section.

Those little red crawlies are the Famous Great Northern Fowl MITE.

Go to any Pet Store (Petco, PetSmart, etc) and go to the caged bird dept.
There look for MITE spray.
Then go home, have help if you are scared, and first thing in the morning while the birds are cooped (not loose) go into the coop, grab each one, flip them upside down, like a baby & have a helper spray their nether regions, while you flip their butt fuzz to & fro........
The spray is permethrin, and will kill the mites FAST!
P.S. These crawlies cannot live on humans, so do not stress about that.
This works really well...especially if you only have a few birds.
I use Eprinex, drops on the back of the neck 2X a year..kills all external & internal parasites.
But Eprinex is spendy, and will expire if not used up.
So not for someone with just a few birds.
Hope this works....works for me

Permethrin has no egg withdrawal, but does not kill internal parasites, just the crawlies on the outside...so it is a start, and inexpensive!
You can buy 2 bottles & spray the roosts & nest boxes as well.
repeat in a week.
Mite eggs can hatch out again in 1 week or so~~

could you pm me the doseage that you apply to the chickens??? also could it be more effective to place near the tail end? that is where it is worse on my birds.... or does it not matter? we never use that stuff on our dogs.... i did once the spring before cause the dog brought in 1 tick, and i didn't want that.

No, goes on behind the neck.
Just lke Top Spot for dogs.
On the tail, they could ingest it.

Hello to all the new folks!!! You may or may not have noticed, lots of us are super busy today heading down to the Poultry Show in Chehalis put on by the Western WA Feather Fanciers. We will have a table there if you all want to pop in and have a visit with us in person!!!

I went out to RedReiners today to pick up Gimp and what a beautiful boy he is!!! Teresa, you will be thrilled to use him in your Lavender Orp project!!! He's having an overnight in my garage and is being well taken care of. And let me tell you, his flock of lovely ladies are to die for!!!! So beautiful!!!

I have put my cheese & cracker tray makings out in the garage fridge (including gluten free crackers!!). I also got some Pita Chips and Hummus. So snacks are ready to go.

I'm going to go put the chairs in as soon as I finish writing this post! Looking forward to seeing all my BYC peeps! I'll be wearing my VERY bright Lime Green BYC Peeps & Quackers t-shirt! I'll bring some labels too we can use for name tags.

Megan is still on the fence about coming. Hoping she does so I'll have some company for the drive down.

Also excited because I'm going to go get the Brinsea out and fire her up in anticipation of the Bantam Faverolle eggs we are getting from Cloverleaf tomorrow.
