I get the blame for lots of things that I know nothing about. But then I have the outlook "Share the wealth (if there is any) Share the blame (there seems to be plenty)"

I don't know, and all three of mine have been crowing at 3am for weeks now; I'd blame something like a neighbor turning on a bright light except the way the three pens are positioned none of them can see the same neighbors, even.

Blame the neighbors anyway - it doesn't have to be their fault for us to blame them

It's possible the roosters are working their revenge on the daycare next door which has still not greased the swivels on their forsaken swing set fweak fweak fweak fweak fweak fweak...

hey guys!
I am very busy sewing feed sack totes.and am getting so fast at it I think I make 2-3 per hour.
It was 21 here night before last, and 27 here last night..all is well.

NO coop heat, but we have heavily insulated & have ceiling vents for humidity..and the bird's warmth keeps the coops warm.
No freezing water fonts in there either.

All is well, and I am going back to my sewing...Later peeps!!!!!!!!!!

Chickens, like many other birds, have the ability to sleep, with one eye open.
So half their brain is asleep, and half awak.
If the rooster hear a bump in the night, it is my guess that they call out a warning..

Just my guess!
Sometimes mine go off all night, but usually it is just 1 or 2 and usually closer to dawn, like 3 AM when they "go off" like a muffled air raid siren.

I am very happy I bought a heated dog bowl last spring on sale (thank you Pitterpatter Palace). I don't have to worry about the free range birds having water at least.

I've been waking up at 3 AM myself, to hear Roopert start crowing

I also heard/felt/noticed military helicopters out on night excursions .... I think they use our area as a turning point, knowing they can land on our airport here if need be, and there is an aerial electronic "intersection" very close by

I'm sure the chickens notice the subtle air disturbance noises, more clearly than I do (part of their inbred survival instincts)

Do you need more feed sacks?

Ya! I'm useing flock raiser with the green bag but I empty one every few days. Been taking them to the recycle at the farm store. Let me know if you want me to save them for you.

What are you doing with the totes? It might not be a bad idea to make totes myself to hand out to co op members for Christmas as a thank you! Ugh, just realized I would need to make over 100! I don't think thats going to happen.
