I don't get through a winter without my back giving me a bad day or two- starting about fourteen years ago when Ruby's mother, a Chesepeake Bay Retriever, knocked me off my feet and on to frozen ground and I ended up crawling a quarter-mile back to the house. Or: why I love cell phones.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a layabout back ache; it's more a combination of standing on cold asphalt for forty minutes yesterday while we waited to be rescued by people with four round tires on their cars, and leaning overdownsideways to put the patch on the siding. I don't get to sit down much of late.

I did get the tree trimmed up and put in the stand, which is some sort of an accomplishment, right? But dinner's coming home with my DH, because my recipe for chili involves about an hour and a half of chopping and sauteing and generally not sitting down. Perhaps when the young lady is done moving out my kitchen stool will be useable for sitting down instead of holding stuff that doesn't get put away.

Maybe I need to bring you some of my Venison Stew??????????

I'm better already; I just need to go to bed and sleep and not push myself tomorrow, which will be pretty easy as I did all the hard stuff today.

Exactly........not drugs, drugs just mask the pain & make you get up & hurt yourself more.
What ya need is PT, and watched exercise & stretching until the body is healed.
With drugs, no one would know the limmit...drugs are NOT what anyone needs short of surgery.

I'm exhausted. Still so much to do. Work is busy as folks are still getting last minute gifts and the personalized wine bottles are popular. Speaking of, I got to meet FlyRobinFly yesterday when she drove into town to purchase a couple of personalized wine bottles herself! Fun to meet her but not enough time to chat as I was getting phone calls, more walk in customers and then even my mother and DD came in, so they were able to meet Robin too!

Good news is, that among all the errands I ran this evening, delivering my 2 EE cockerels to a new family was one of them! Those guys started crowing this week, not once, twice, thrice, but at least 10 times in a row every morning this week. I put an ad on Craigslist and got a call the next morning from a fellow in Roy whose wife had some EE hens and needed a chickie daddy for them. I convinced him to take both. I needed them gone this week so was only asking $5 each.

Still have baking and wrapping, and shopping to do. DD put up our little tree, has done a lot of shopping for me and wrapped quite a few gifts. She has already asked this evening what I still needed her to do tomorrow. Did I mention how happy I am to have her home?

Oh, I also decided that instead of an abundance of candy in our Christmas stockings this year, I'm stuffing them all with alcohol minis. I picked up a basket full at the liquor store tonight. I'm wondering how easily they'll be found in the future when grocery stores and Costco are using their limited shelf space for larger bottles of limited selections. Hope no one here has a taste for specialty liquor items. Come June you may be hard pressed to find them. DH says that's when all the stores have to have their alcohol back to the distribution warehouse where he works, (at least through June).

I might just crack open one of those minis to keep me company while I wrap gifts tonight...

nope no way. every day chronic pain is debilitating and drags a system down. chronic pain causes lots of mental and physical side effects. I am in pain daily, I do not take pain meds daily but when it hurts enough to make me vomit, I take pain meds. they dont cover it but they take the edge off so I can at least load my dishwasher and feed the critters. dont swear it off if you need it, use it wisely and it can and will help you get enough peace so that you can function again.

for me, aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, and the inflammation and swelling are usually what is causing the pain for me

reduce the swelling and the subsequent inflammation, and the CAUSE of the pain goes away

reduce the pain and the cramping also eases off ... which eases more of the pain

none of the other NSAIDs seem to have the same effect for me

aspirin is truly a wonder drug -- yes it must be taken with care for the known side effects

but this is true for anything

once a year or so, even the aspirin won't relieve the muscle cramps (fell as a preteen, permanently messed up my back);
then thank God (and the pharmaceutical companies) for Valium, which makes all muscles let go --- then I can sleep and let body heal itself

I do think it depends of course on the source of pain, like in CLs case, a physical injury, that could possible heal given rest, surgery ect, then yea you may be able to get away with little to no pain relief, on the other hand what RR says is true too because, if you are in too much pain continuously your body will start to sort of shut down and not allow healing because it's in protection mode. Ok, not sure if that makes sense, but, something I learned actually as a vet tech, animals go through the same thing in a way. I have chronic pain in my hip, no nsaids will touch it, they gave me tremodol which is like demerol, (sp) it sucked! It didn't work well, it makes me sick to my stomach and dizzy and it's worthless for me. Went and had the EMG and it was normal!!! Ok, so that ruled out Radiculopathy, so what!!!?? I'm still in pain. Ok, I'm going to put this out there and maybe someone else has had this happen, for the last 4 months, I could hardly walk! I had a burning in my glutes, where the head of the femur goes into the acetabulum, and down the front of my thigh to my knee!! And my hip joint, this is all right sided. I can't sit too long, stand too long, walk too long, or lay down with out pain. I would put the pain level at 8-9 on a scale of 1-10, the other day, I went to pen up my goats, and because they are quick, I had to jump aside and close the gate. Ok that day, same pain level right? I woke up the next day and most of the pain was down to a 7-8 I could move better, didn't have as much burning and I didn't limp any more?? I'm thinking slipped disc?? But if they ruled out radiculopathy, then what could it have been pressing on?? I'm still in pain, but not even close to the issues I was having at the beginning of the week!!

I can't see my VA Dr till Jan 10, so I'm kinda out there in limbo. Anyone else ever had that??? I have had chronic back pain and issues for almost 30 yrs, hurt myself while in the Navy, they are paying me a little and covering some Drs costs. But, this hip thing started in 05, with occasional stiffness, they ruled it had nothing to do with my back!! and it's just gotten continually worse since. Ok sorry didn't mean to change the subject !! Hows those Sea chickens!! LOL

Tell him not to stop trying. I used to smoke too - it took me 25 years to stop, after several tries. Been smoke free now since June 22, 2006

It can be done!

Yes but the most important thing is HE REALLY has to want to. I am still struggling with no snoose but not going back as much as I liked it for 30 years I am not gonna do it. I just passed 7 months and there are few things I would miss as much as my snoose but not gonna do it.
