You know, I'm not entirely unserious about putting a hoop house over my entire yard and house. They make them bigger for commercial greenhouses, you know.
And then a sort of hamster-ball-for-humans to use in the fields (although it would need traction tires or some sort of power assist to get up and down hills).
Or possibly a surveilance drone. I could use a surveillance drone during calving season. Especially since the preferred calving location is "as far from the house as possible."
Stupid weather.
Stupid, stupid, dumb weather.

I can just picture the hamster ball rolling around as you do your chores!

Technology is getting cheaper and smaller all the time, I'm sure there will soon be (or stuff you can already adapt) tiny cameras with transmitters that you can attach to ear tags so you can sit down at the computer and check on location of your cattle and what they're doing.

Wow. So apparently there are 2166 unread posts in this thread, for me I mean.

That's a lot of catching up to do!

We had an interesting afternoon. Right after I posted it was hailing, it turned into a sleety snowy mix. We ended up getting about an inch of slippery stuff. Then my daughter's middle school bus, attempted to go up a huge hill, got stuck, then started sliding down the hill backwards! Needless to say, I had to go and fetch my daughter. She said she's never heard the bus so quiet as all the kids were terrified! There was a long line of cars backed up behind the bus. The elementary school bus driver called to say please wait at the bottom of the hill to pick up the younger daughter, after hearing of the issues the other bus had around the corner from our house! DD's friend texted her about an hour after I picked her up that the bus was still stuck there!

I hope it all melts overnight and we are done with winter! SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo ready for spring!!!

We now have 3 BLRW's out plus the mystery bantam cochin chick! And a bunch more pips! Thinking the cochin must be a dominant white. She looks like a white cochin chick. Even though all parent stock was black split for lavender. Does this make sense to any genetically knowledgable peeps here?

what end needs to be up for hatching eggs? And how long will a broody sit on a nest? Will she stay broody as long as there are eggs under her?

I had numbered my eggs this time. And when I candled number 4 it had veins. Well I went to let them out this morning and to check on the eggs since today they are supposed to hatch today. Well number 4 is missing its gone. =( So I started collecting eggs again. I don't know if any of the others will hatch. Most of them were refergerated so now I am collecting eggs and putting them on the counter.

Broody mamas often know when something is wrong; and a good broody may even eat or kick out non-viable eggs. So if she kicked one egg out and still has three - you still have a chance for a hatch.

Here is a really good article about broody hens - I cannot tell you how many times I ready this the first time we had a girl go broody! http://www.themodernhomestead.us/article/Broody-Hens-1.html

If after 24 days she does not hatch any eggs, you way want to pick up some chicks for her and sneak them underneath her at night rather than letting her sit another 21 days. My girls got really skinny after sitting for 21 days, longer may not be good for their health.

I took a nap, it was raining when I hit the couch...I woke up to a blizzard and two inches of snow...yuck...

Even we had snow - just enough elevation I guess! Not two inches, just a heavy dusting.

I somehow still have a non-working mini fridge that someone could turn into an incubator. (Somehow means I forgot to recycle it when the recyclers were here - oops!) It's clean inside - used at work to hold beverages under my desk. Would make a great, smaller incubator.

I can bring it to the Monroe show if someone wants it. The price is right, free!
