Well I am going to confess that we haven't followed any of the rules about lock down. I have had to help more chicks than I should of ever needed. So I have had to do way more helping with hatching chicks in this past week. DH has been grabbing the chicks out as soon as each one hatches. I just about lost it, when he told me that he used boiling water on the sponges. I had told him that he needed to use hot water on the sponges so that the humidity would recover faster. I meant for him to use the hot tap water, not boiling water. I am amazed that so far we have had 13 chicks hatch out of this batch. I am unclear about how many I started with. Most of the eggs were from the week after I sold Harold. I also have a broody hen setting on a clutch of eggs. I am not counting on any thing hatching from that clutch, but I could be wrong about it, so I am letting her do her thing and hoping that something will happen.
I think that so far I have had to help four or five shrink wrapped chicks out of their shells. There is another batch of eggs that were started on the 26th, so they have a bit more time to go before they should hatch. I am going to have way more half Light Sussex/variety chicks around here. I am end up raking them to the auction. I am not certain which hens laid what egg. So far all but 2 chicks are black or very dark blue. Then there are the 2 yellow chicks. I am fairly sure that they are 100 percent Light Sussex.
