Woo...evening everyone. Fighting a loverly sinus infection/allergies today. Feel a sneeze comin, and it stops, backs up and lets the liquid squeeze out my eyes, a most excellent feeling indeed. We have been busy here, with the weather being nice the last few days, I went out to the garden, yes, with my bath towel hanky in tow, and planted broccoli, cauliflower and lettuce starts that were ready to go in the hoop house, added our organic slug bait, and will try to get them covered up tomorrow. The glass greenhouse is just chock a block full of starts, and I have 1200 onions that need to be planted before Saturday. :)

Marty, one of our buff orp girlies was almost gone the other day with a coyote. Rikke (DW) has been working on her daily to get the holes on the mend, the large tear on her back to start a healing, and the hole back by her vent closed up. She is doing well, and should be moved out into the larger brooder / apartment, I made for her in the garage. Going to go get some of that closed cell 1 1/2 inch foam sheeting to make sure she is warm out there. The cement floor would not be good for her to repair in. Made a mobile run for her to be in outside when one of us it out there with her, she seems to like being with the other girls, but, not being WITH them for her own safety. Rikke checked out Marty's leg today, it does not seem broken, she seems to think it is muscle or nerve damage that is not yet healed. Rikke seems to have a knack for taking care of the animals here, giving the goats, and the chickens their shots when needed, and when vitally necessary for them to heal. Pen-G makes a mess of a chicken's poo .. not like it isn't already messy. ;)

Here is a pic of Marty out in her mobile shelter, enjoying the outdoors.

Time for the Netti Pot!

I managed to get away with just a bad sinus infection when DH, both kids, and 2 co-workers got the flu. I waited util the pressure built up too much before I used the netti, so everything drained stained dark with blood and resembled slugs more than the usual crud. grossed me out as I thought of Harry Potter and the kid coughing up slugs, and I pictured them crawling up my ear canals where I had felt these drain from.

Marty looks like she is making a remarkablle recovery - chicken hugs the Rikke!

Ugh I better go to bed I am so tired. Keep us updated about your friend, dont hesitate to ask if you need anything. I hope Marty makes a quick recovery and is able to join her friends soon. To everyone else I hope you have a wonderful night.

Just wish the leg would show more improvement. She stands up more and more everyday, and she can hop, sort-of, and stumbly walk, and then crashes, usually catching herself with her wing. Tomorrow I will be adding a roosting spot to her mobile RV cage, and we can see if she has interest in trying to get on it. I already have one built into her apartment, but, she has yet to be moved out to the garage. She needs to heal up some before send her out there.

ok ok .. what the heck is a nettie pot ... I have buku slugs to get rid of.

Google is a wonder of finding things out. thanks!

I just use a cute little clay teapot that DH brought home from his travels in China years ago. It was sittng on a shelf as decoaration in a room where nobody sees it, so now it is sitting on a windowsill and people pick it up and admire the detailed artwork without realizing what I use it for. (The slugs don't go in the pot!). If you are really super badly congested, you can feel everything loosen from your sinuses at once and you can feel it in your ears when the mega huge slug drains exits your brain. I was soo grossed out by that, that I will never wait so long again. The sinus pain goes out with the slug, it really works. Just make sure you have the bathroom door locked, it'd really freak someone out to see all what you can clear from your sinuses!

I finally got out to visit my friend with the brain tumor. They released her from the hospital a few days ago. I'm shocked, stunned. Her doctors/insurance company will be recieving a few calls. She lives alone and cannot even stand up by herself! She has friends and neighbors taking turns staying with her and helping her with everything. In the middle of the night she got up to use the toilet and did not wake the person staying over; she toppled over and landed upside-down in the bath tub! She has thrush from all the antibiotics they pumped her full of and a severe rash over her entire body. She is puffy, hot, red, in severe pain, and so heavily drugged that she was not even coherent when they sent a physical therapist over to work with her today. It was the therapists first visit. The therapist was asking her questions that seemed to imply she was like this BEFORE the surgery, that the weakness was caused by her lupus and fibromyalgia. I let the therapist know this is one of the strongest women I know - she remodeled her own home by herself - heavy work too, new kitchen and deck too, and she did it all herself. She has an amazing garden too. She is not someone to sit around and feel sorry for herself.

I was trying to help her out a bit and was shocked because after only 3 weeks, she has almost no muscle tone. She should not be home. She should be in rehab until she is strong enough to walk to the bathroom on her own. The therapist said she will need to learn how to use a walker, but expects it will take weeks for her insurance to approve one. I am going to go to the senior center and see if I can locate one. I have already found a commode with arms that fits over the toilet so that she will have something to steady herself on.

Why would they let someone in that condition go home? They put big yellow bands on her arm that say "FALL RISK" and they sent her home with NO AID!

Why is it that we value $$$ over lives? This is cruel!

Because insurance money ran out. If she wan on medicare they only pay for 30 days in a hospital and the hospital likes to send them to a nursing home if possible and the money is there in the insurance/medicare. Nursing homes will take your money and give as little as possible back. My wife was at Sharron Care (rated in the top 10% of the nation), they're a joke. Rehabilitation is a very, very poor to non existent. I wish wish your friend and you well.
(sorry about the rant)

Please check out availabitlity of medicaide, it's a State run agentcy. I found them very helpful when my wife was in the nursing home. As it turned out my wife passed away b4 needing medicaide. Note; it really is not free if you own property. They told me they would come after any property and claim it to settle the debt if possible and they said it is the law. They have to. I don't know for sure, I'm just saying what was said to me.

Come get him. He is so irritating. His name is Poofy. But he is such an irritating "teenager". Likes to sprawl across your back (kids lying on floor watching TV or reading) or across your lap...and if I shove him off my lap and make him angry. He pouts and jumps into my laundry bag.

Hello all. I live in Kitsap County not far from Poulsbo. I just inherited 7 chicken so I built a small coop from a kit that said it would accommodate 7-10 chickens. Well, I don't believe it so I am building a bigger one from scratch. The current coop will be large enough for now especially since I built a large chicken run for them. I've only had them 6 days and they have given me 14 eggs already!

I'm lookIng to increase my flock my 3 more chickens. I'm brand. Ew at this and am reading everything on the subject I can find. Looking forward to advice and make some new connections with other chicken folks.

Quote: So sorry you guys are having to go through this.
While it is so very nice of you and others to pitch in and help.

Please get somebody working on getting her professional care giver help.

I can tell you from when DW had her stroke that it won't be long before those helping will burn out and then there will be nobody again. It really does become overwhelming.

And to you and the friends / neighbors who are helping your friend I say thank you on her behalf.

Also if need be turn to your representatives and or the media.
