Just sayin.

Just a heads up.... California Laurel is not Bay
California bay (Umbellularia californica) is sold to you as bay leaves you buy at your grocery store and use in your recipes. It is cheap and fast growing plant so it is commonly used by food industry.
Laurus nobilis Bay Leaf Tree Native to Mediterranean regions. Mediterranean Bay Leaf Tree is used in cultures worldwide as a essential cooking spice. It is slower growing and more picky about where it grows.
The two trees are not even in the same plant family and there is no comparison between the two for culinary use.
I have some Mediterranean bay in my yard if you would like some to compare

My trees were not supposed to survive the winters here, so were planted close to the house for warmth and protection...... now they grow to fast and winter does nothing to them.... This means I have 5 trees in my side of house planter boxes/areas.... Yikes!
Oooooh, plant-nerd here. I just can't ignore little mistakes like this, so forgive me. I will positively implode if I don't correct, so please please please indulge me a bit!

The two trees are indeed in the same family, Lauraceae. California Bay is just Oregon Myrtle, one and the same. Those **** Californians just cornered the common-name-thing for the culinary market. One "laurel" doesn't belong in that family--English laurel, also called cherry laurel-- and belongs in the rose family, being the same genus as cherries and plums ("Prunus"). That's your ultra-common "laurel" used in hedges.

I do agree about the flavor. We live in a colder area of the Wet Side, but this winter our laurel didn't die back to the roots like the previous 3 winters.

Hey, I don't blame you one bit! One of my former jobs was as a script supervisor for movies. That's the person who makes sure that the glass doesn't appear and disappear over and over in the same scene from shot to shot (as well as a multitude of other things the scripty has to do.) The joke with friends and, especially, family was that it was a perfect job for me because I was far too excited about hair-splitting and being hyper-critical of every little nuance. Trust me - you DO NOT want to watch TV or a movie with me!!

Yours die back? You should see mine! It was trained into more of a tree than a bush/shrub and is about 10-15 feet tall! I didn't believe the previous owner when she told me that it was a Turkish Laurel until I got close and saw the shape of the leaves. I just pruned it and have two paper bags full of the leaves.

Other than a few specific trees, I don't know a thing about them in the Pac. NW. I need you here! I get asked what kind of tree something is and my answer is always "A green and brown one." We have over 8 acres and only 1.5-2 of them are not densely wooded. Wooded with what? Dunno!

So JEALOUSSSS!!!!! DH is plugged into his game, girls are rough housing/teasing/being loud to each other.

We didn't watch the American Idol episode last night. So think I might go watch it on DVR, pour myself a glass of wine, and try and zone out!!! LOL!

G'night Folks!!!

Two am setting here waiting for the next round of pain meds to kick in. I am not one to normally take the pain meds but I am so thankful the doc sent me home with 4.

I am well aware that some may take issue with the things that I post or how I come across. I am ok with that. I know that we not all see things the same. Yes I will admit that there are or have been others on here that have irritated me too. However I have been working on being a little more understanding of others. See I have actually ask some third parties for information that may help me to understand. Sometimes people are trying to deal with issues that are unknown to most and if we simply take/ make the time to learn about them perhaps we can also be helpful rather than make the final comment that may push them over the edge.
I DO NOT intentionally come here to stir up trouble or be hurtful to others. My life is about trying to help others however I can.
If I do irritate some people I am sorry that you feel that way but this is just me the same as I have been since I joined BYC long before many now on here.
So if I do bother you please feel free to just ignore my posts or even try out the "block member" button. You really are not going to hurt my feelings by doing that since I will never know. And hey worst case IF the mods feel that I am just too much of a problem child then they can deal with me as they may. I hope that never comes to be but I am aware that it is always a possibility.

And in the mean time bless you all. I am so thankful for my family here on BYC and the special ones who I know I can turn to when I need someone.

And on a little lighter side. Michelle would not allow me to drive myself she said I could ride with her or she would call the bus (the one with all the pretty lights).. I am not much on mass transit so opted to have Michelle take me.
So we get to the ER, I have the red juice running out of my head, down my face and all over my hand that is holding the dressing on. They ask me "what happened".Well anyone who knows CR knows this is gonna get twisted. And my reply was simple. Well see my girlfriend here (pointing at Michelle) caught me with my wife, got pi**ed off and took a fence post pounder to my head. Poor Michelle thought she knew me NOT well enough! Michelle said from now on she will just let me lay there and bleed. Of course I did finally tell them all the right story but that just wasn't as fun.

glad to hear you are doing okay. and....watch it Michelle is probably gong to thump you after you are all healed up.

That's funny. I was watching "Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull" the other night and they showed a red LED digital countdown timer...in a movie set in the 50's...

I too am a plant nerd, I know enough about Michigan native trees and plants to know that I don't know much at all.

Okay, so here is my new vehicle, monthly payment less, little less insurance, and lot less $$$$ for gas. It is fun to drive...I gotta be careful...gonna get myself in trouble:
