Ok, you garden "Pro's" I have a question. How much fresh ( 1-2 weeks old) chicken poop do you think I should use in a garden.? like around tomato plants, cukes, and peppers?
Thanks !

Others may say differently...but NONE...I do believe that chicken is to hot and you need to mulch it down some. Rabbit is about the only one you can use fresh fromthe source. Build a compost pile...throw in coop goodies, yard clippings. Turn occasionally. Use in the fallor next spring. This is what I do. Course for Tomato, cukes, and peppers you can also make a "tea". Not sure if you can use fresh though. I hope you get better answers than this.

Ron, that is much too soon to use on the garden. You need to compost it first, let is sit a couple of months first, or it will burn the veggies as it is considered a HOT manure.

Here is a good article on how to use it best:

Sorry, read through this too fast to find the original post.....

Do you have the manure mixed with ample bedding? Or do you scrape it of from piles of pure manure? It is still more useful for fertilizer when composted either way, but mixed in with the bedding you aren't going to "burn" your plants like the more concentrated manure would.

Hope everyone is well & CR's perfect head is not growing hair.....that would mean it is no longer perfect

Yes my head is even more prefect because not only do chicks dig scars they dig them even more on a perfect BALD HEAD LIKE MINE ! ! ! ! And I am pretty sure this will leave a scar.

Hi all, I miss ya!

Recuperating and hope to be back soon. Neighbor dogs got in my yard last week and killed 3 hens. Shasta jumped her enclosure and fought the other dogs off. Sad Day

Well today is done... 7 golden sex links went out into the big pen with all the other adult chickens. They jumped right into the swing of things and are doing well. 6 rouen ducks went into the duck/turkey pen. The turkey's just ignore them and 3 of the adult ducks do. The one duck is trying to put them into place but other than that she is leaving the mudd puppies to enjoy the pool... the baby's have 80% of their grown up feathers and are pretty big... Saw the strangest thing today... a tom turkey sitting on one of the nests. We have 2 nests of turkey eggs. I had never heard of something like this. My one and only rooster is ready to become chicken soup.... I went into the pen to give the chickens food and Jimmy (the rooster) took flight and aimed for my face in full attack mode. He knocked my glasses off which blinded me a few minutes. I got them back on and grabbed a big stick that the hens like to roost on and when he tried to attack again I took aim. Only managed to stun him for a few minutes so i could get out of the pen. Yup definately time for this roo to go...As soon as hubby feels better... He has bronchitis so is stuck in bed...

Jimmy Rooster stew sounds like it will be delicious. I have found that the meanest roo will make the best chicken dinner. lol

Hi Ron,
How's your recovery coming along?
I think 1-2 weeks is way too early - you're gonna burn those plants!
I have three big compost bins. Seems to me most of my compost sits for a year or so before I use it.
I mix the coop stuff with coffee grounds, grass clippings and some veggie garden clippings.
I thought you were NOT going to make a garden!

I'm in Kitsap County. I've got 5 hens and three growing fast chicks all of them Australorps! I'm relatively new at this. I never grew up around chickens. I adopted my 5 hens back around Thanksgiving and have been learning as I go. A little over a month ago I purchased 3 more chicks. This backyard chicken site has been a great help to me along with my local feed store. Sometimes I think I ask too many questions there and I think I'm driving them nuts! lol!

Welcome to the Washington thread and BYC. Feel free to jump in and ask questions. I don't know of any one here that doesn't mind answering a question or 10. There are enough of us that someone always knows the answer or where to find the answer. Or sometimes some of us have been know to make up answer.
