We still need to build our run but we have 2 large dog kennels made of chain link that we'll use. I'm still not sure how to bury and secure the hardware cloth around the bottom of it though, because there's a door of chain link that opens too...
The girls are already in their coop though since it has electricity and a brooder lamp inside.

The best one to talk to about security, is Greg Richardson....I made all my runs by his design, and I have never had 1 bird lost.....and we are surrounded, 15 feet from fence, by thousands of acres of wilderness.

P.S. The double thixk green plastic 1/2" fencing is secured on the inside of the chick pen.....so as ya see the wee babes there, and they can run back inside to the heat lamp if they need to.

But by 10 weeks shouldn't they be plenty able to keep warm without the lamp? Or perhaps I could keep using the brooder lamp but only at night...IDK, I'm new

By ten weeks I toss them out in the starter coop...just sayin'.... by then they will sink or swim.
BUT ya have to know I have all double walled & insulated coops.
Outside air will not get them if temps sink at night.
I do keep windows cracked for fresh air is necessary.
Now that I think on it, I transfer started birds out of the brooder by 1) fledging and 2) by age.
For example, I have a big crop of BBS Jersey Giants...hatched with BBS Blue Copper Marans.............one is growing BIGGER but yet has not the fldeging required to GO OUT.
So what the moral of the story is: Let the bird decide: provide a door to the outside worl in a protected pen...and let them venture.
Remember a broody hen will take her chicks out into the world the day after they hatch !
When the chicks are chilled, they seek warmth.
These are day old babies.
I let Momma take them where she wanted !

Well, Pettec & DH came & went, & we gathered all the T-birds up,,, had a great but late lunch....then loaded baby chicks...then the tater salad.............and metal stuff for CR...and off they went, the most awesome couple ! Strong & working & in love...Terry & Julie are a sight ! Such a love is there~~~~~~~And partnership ! BOTH work their fannies off ! There is no slacking in their relationship !
I so luvem !!
Hopefully CR likes/needs the metal scrap stuff we saved for him ?
I gotta go deal with other issues like feeding Einstein.........so later Peeps !!

The new girl on the block and the reason I haven't been on in a while. Boy is she SMART! Learned how to open the kitchen cupboards in a day and remove stuff, like the garbage trash can, food from the pantry etc. I can't take my eyes off her for a minute. Plus, she is as strong as an ox; she's a baby, 9 months and 54 pounds of energy.

She's Beautiful! Airedale? I want one. Next Dog.

My shepherd/poodle mix is too smart. She knows how to open lever type door handles. If she is inside and I am out, she will test all the doors until she finds one that is not locked.

I'm still supposed to keep my leg elevated, but I have been walking around some more. I went out and visited the chickens (others don't clean the coop like I did. I am going to try and tackle it soon). I also went out to the dog cabin/pen. Shasta had climbed over the 6' gate to save her hens from the neighbor dogs the other week; I can tell because the wire is totally mangled. She's a great dog. I can't wait to spend more time with my pets.

I have probably 30 or 40 empty egg cartons if you have chickens. Would love to get a few fresh eggs but not a requirement for the free egg cartons. Email me if interested.

I have enough egg cartons, but I'd gladly give you some eggs. Most of my customers were co-workers, so I am only selling about 6 dozen per week now, and we usually get close to 2 dozen per day.

I started saving all my egg cartons since we decided to get chicks in January! Not every single one because my hubby has a bad habit of putting gross cracked eggs back into the cartons, but most of them! I think I have enough for at least 100dz eggs, LOL! AND, we will probably eat almost all the eggs we get from our 11 girls (or perhaps 9 if the runt dies and the possible roo goes to freezer camp) because our family is dairy/soy/gluten intolerant and we eat a lot of eggs! I hope we don't eat them all because I really would like to sell the extras to the neighbors and friends. It would certainly help towards feed for the girls!
