I changed to the correct spelling

. I am a horrible speller.

They are frim Marans, France.....................an S on the end.
They are Marans. It is not a plural..it is a city in France. Like Paris. This city where the breed developed, is Marans.

There is no such thing as having 1 maran.
You say You have 1 Marans.

They ended up calling me, my son handed me the phone while I was in the barn and a few of the girls were in the middle of an egg song. I agree it is just one of the ways they’re trying to control track the American people.

Yeah, broody hens have the fluffy warm real estate, don't they?

We'll run a lamp out into the hutch. We have some banties. Some are Cochins, and they look like they could survive an arctic blast. I think they'll be fine but I'm such a softie. I used to tuck my stuffed animals in on cold nights.

We seem to be missing some regular posters around here. Is everyone OK? Updates?

I have hundreds of chicks with NO broody hen, in my brooder pens, and they have an access door, and can go free range in a 25 foot by 70 foot pen, covered.......and when they are chilled they come indoors.
If it is snowing out, I do not open the access door, other than that, I DO.

One must be careful on what one discusses here. There's a poster who likes to report non-feely-good,warm and fuzzy posts to the "flock watcher". That said, I also received that form and promptly forgot about it. Then I got the phone call by them. The only farm related stuff I have ever alluded to has been joining this forum. Anyway this was b4 I pulled the trigger on my decision to raise a few chickens for eggs and for something to do. It makes me wonder.

Dang, I might have overdone it a tad the last 2 days.

Well we figured out how we could configure the kennel outside to make the run, now we just have to get the coop leveled and set down on blocks permanently, and the run permanently attached! Coming together, slowly but surely!

Lay it flay on the ground around the run. That will prevent animals from digging their way in.

Out of a roll of 5-6 foot fence wire, you can cut strips off 2 foot wide as shown above...then sit on yer fanny & tie them onto the fence, after a year or so all will be bured in tree leaves, and nothing can dig under.

I wouldn't leave food out at night. It attracts rats and raccoon, and possum, and Lord knows what else. Chickens don't eat at night, so they don't need it.

Another thing: it would be MUCH cheaper to use chicken wire instead of hardware cloth if y'all don't think I need to use it for rodent protection with the hanging feeder. I would love to just buy that stuff and be done with it, vs. saving up for a while to afford the hardware cloth. eesh.

And if you need rodent protection you need hardware clothe.
Buying one will not make the other disapear. In the case of rodents (AND YOU WILL HAVE THEM !) do not scrimp.

What if I just raise the food each evening to the height of the roof? That way I dont have to find a nighttime home for the food. Should be easy with an S hook...
