We burned litter today. Unfortunately, it got wet in the rain, so it was a little smokey. It doesn't smell too bad - it's burning pine chips. For the longest time I could smell the fire, but didn't realize what my husband was doing. We ate dinner in the backyard with the fire going. Seems fine. During dinner I asked him what he was burning and he told me. It didn't bother me at all, and didn't seem to faze my mom one bit even though the fire was about 20 feet from us.
Awesome! I just told DH about it and he's on board!

My three-week-old babies spent their first day "outside" today. I decided it was time for them to earn their keep and weed and debug the greenhouse. They loved it! They were so funny when they discovered the worms. My Light Brahma ended up with a little bit of a sore on the beak during a battle over a worm. I'll be on owie duty for a while making sure the others leave her beak alone. They were out there quite a few hours because the greenhouse stays so warm. I put them away when the started to huddle. I hope I didn't over-do their first outdoor adventure.

Can anyone tell - are they old enough to figure out if they are pullets or not? Left to right they are an Easter Egger, Light Brahma and Rhode Island Red.

Those of you who lost birds today, I just want to tell you I'm sorry!

How cute! Glad they had fun in the greenhouse, looks like they enjoyed it and pulled their weight! LOL I think the easter egger and brahma are definitely pullets but keep an eye on the RIR, their combs turn pretty red around 4-5 weeks old and have a massive growth spurt, then you'll know. Right now it's too early to tell. Also hard to tell when you only have one of each breed; can't compare them to each other. One of my RIRs is a roo and will be leaving us on Saturday; his "sister" is most definitely a girl, her comb is still tiny and yellow, whereas this guy's comb and wattles are bright red and growing fast!

That's good to know. We're so nervous that one (or more) of them will turn out to be a roo. When we bought them, we thought they would be pullets for sure - because that's what the store bin said. We had no clue that we should buy more than the number we wanted just in case. I don't know what I'll do if we end up with only 1 or 2 pullets. They need their little flock. If I could do it over, I would have bought six - the number of chickens we're allowed to have on our lot.

There's someone in Tacoma (don't know where you are) who sells pullets from their farm. They have a CL listing for a bunch of different breeds of different ages. Search the following phone number and you might be able to find some pullets of the same age as your girls and integrate them really easily. (253) 327-5039 is the listing phone number and all sorts of breeds pop up.

If Seattle Farm Supply doesn't end up having the ages I want on Saturday when I return the rooster I got from them, I'll be going to Tacoma for a few girls

Oh thanks!!! We're in Auburn. We can go either way (Seattle or Tacoma). BTW... sorry you have to return your roo. I hope he wasn't a favorite.
