Still have tools to put in their proper places - and a splinter to dig out of a finger. Planted my first garden yesterday.
Woke up this am to a headless bird. What predator eats the head and neck?

I am sorry to hear 4 of the silkie eggs weren't fertile. My broody is sitting on 7 silkie eggs and 1 or 2 of them were not fertile either. He must of taken a small break and gone after my EE's.Oh CRUDthe turkey eggs that Ebony has been on look to have not been fertal!
There was no development at all.![]()
Also the silkie eggs that I have under Big Burtha.... 4 were not fertal eather. So I am thinking of slpiting the remainder of the 8 silkie eggs between the two ladies.![]()
Last night I put my little Brahma in the *hospital* kennel facing the other two birds so she got a break from the chick chair and had time to stretch and preen. I filled it with lots of shredded paper and covered the paper with paper towels. She laid down and went to sleep. She seemed so happy to be out of the chair. The other two were happy to see her, too.
I was hoping one day in the chick chair would be enough. She's doing better, but she still can't put weight on that leg. So, she's back in the chick chair today. I feel so bad for her. She takes it very well unless I walk away from her, then she chirps like crazy. The rest of the family can be in the room with her, but if I leave, she goes crazy. It' s kind of funny - in an annoying sense. It's like I have an infant attached to the hip again.![]()
Quote: Check this out, I just bought a book yesterday; "The Chicken Encyclopedia" and it has a section that desribes what you find (as far as dead bird) and what animal could have done it. There are two that take the head, one is if you have Bobcats in your area but them attacking chickens is rare. Sais you would find Head bitten off, claw marks on neck, back and sides, body partially covered with litter.
The other one is a Raccoon: Backs bitten, heads missing, necks and breasts torn, or breasts and entrails eaten; or bird pulled into fence and partially eaten; or body found away from shelter; may be scattered feathers.
I love this book, anything and everything chicken.
Very sorry for your loss!![]()
