Oh, I am so sorry! I read about that. It could have been a racoon that reached in and pulled it's head through the wire. Or, a weasel or a mink. An owl might have gotten to it, too. Different predators take different parts of the bird.

I hear ya, it's been soaking like crazy out there. I hear it should clear up soon though.

When you have the chance, try Paul Robeson some time. Cool weather lover, probably will do very well without a greenhouse out here, and the most delicious purple/black tomatoes ever. They're not as sweet as others, instead they're more meaty and savory in flavor, practically smoked and slightly earthy. Absolutely delicious. They actually are sensitive in my greenhouse heat at times, so I try my best to keep them nearest a window for cool air circulation.

Last night I put my little Brahma in the *hospital* kennel facing the other two birds so she got a break from the chick chair and had time to stretch and preen. I filled it with lots of shredded paper and covered the paper with paper towels. She laid down and went to sleep. She seemed so happy to be out of the chair. The other two were happy to see her, too.

I was hoping one day in the chick chair would be enough. She's doing better, but she still can't put weight on that leg. So, she's back in the chick chair today. I feel so bad for her. She takes it very well unless I walk away from her, then she chirps like crazy. The rest of the family can be in the room with her, but if I leave, she goes crazy. It' s kind of funny - in an annoying sense. It's like I have an infant attached to the hip again.

So I am thinking of slpiting the remainder of the 8 silkie eggs between the two ladies.
I am sorry to hear 4 of the silkie eggs weren't fertile. My broody is sitting on 7 silkie eggs and 1 or 2 of them were not fertile either. He must of taken a small break and gone after my EE's.

Quote: Check this out, I just bought a book yesterday; "The Chicken Encyclopedia" and it has a section that desribes what you find (as far as dead bird) and what animal could have done it. There are two that take the head, one is if you have Bobcats in your area but them attacking chickens is rare. Sais you would find Head bitten off, claw marks on neck, back and sides, body partially covered with litter.
The other one is a Raccoon: Backs bitten, heads missing, necks and breasts torn, or breasts and entrails eaten; or bird pulled into fence and partially eaten; or body found away from shelter; may be scattered feathers.
I love this book, anything and everything chicken.

Very sorry for your loss!
