So this morning I went out to check on Burtha and her chicks (silkies) and the one and only yellow/white one was not really walking around at all. She was just standing there. Then I watched Burtha with her big ol feet step and stand on the chick. My DD said that she saw this same thing happen this morning to that same chick. I am not sure if it was sick to begin with and that is why she kept getting steped on sense she would not move out of the way when momma was coming threw. So I brought her in and dipped her beak into the water a few times. She just kept shaking her head every time I did it. She is very lethargic and week. Then I noticed that she has lice! Yeah! I grabed a bowl of DE and rubbed her down with it, trying to rub it into her fur/feathers hoping that will help. But I have this stuff called Insectrin Dust (Permethrin) for lice but I don't know how young is too young for chickens and chicks. It sais you can use it on dogs and cat just not kittens and pups. Does any one know if I can use it on week old chicks?????
I most of that stuff is supposed to be used on older animals, but the chick will die if you don't. Just be careful not to get is in the eyes and nose. I hope someone else out there has done this before and can chime in. I was talking to WA4-Hpoultry mom one time and she said she had to do it once. Give her some electrolytes in the water too. If you don't have some you can get chick saver or something like that at feed stores.

Well we finally went out to feed the girls a treat of leftover salami (yep, they're spoiled) and right as we got outside for the very first time today...the skies opened up to produce the biggest and longest hailstorm I've ever seen! We have a metal roof too, so it was really fun and loud in the house. The kids were thrilled! I love hail and weird weather. Though I prefer it in months that aren't supposed to be spring/summer weather.

I have never used that. But it sounds like you need to get the chick saver.

Is this one a silkie?

Yes, I have used the permethrin dust on chicks before when we didn't realize the broody momma had mites and they moved to the chicks and we lost one and the other chicks were covered. We were careful not to get in near their face, and you might have to dust them again in a week or so if they have laid eggs on the chicks to kill the baby mites. Are you sure it's lice and not mites? We have to treat for mites pretty regularly, but haven't dealt with lice at all.

So we get home from wonderful Cabo, and it seem's Murphy has decided to visit. DH called me at noon yesterday, and his 2003 New Beetle, which we have been nursing along forever, would not get out of 3rd gear. It needs a new transmission, and we don't want to fix it since he has had a new car on order FOREVER (seriously, since last September!!!), and they tell us it will be here by July 9th at the latest. He was finally able to get it home after stopping and restarting the car several times, so here it sits until we can trade it in. Then yesterday, I had to drive down to Carnation to pick up my girls, and upon return home, in Duvall, my car starts flashing a warning to check tire pressure in one of my tires. I stop at Shell and fill it up, and barely made it home. It was completely flat within minutes of parking it. And has a huge gash in it, so it's not repairable. So we needed new tires anyway, but wasn't expecting to get them until fall. So DH spent the morning dealing with that. Than my youngest DD woke up at 1:30 am puking all over the bathroom, and now I haven't felt so hot all afternoon. Blech. Back to reality I guess! LOL!!!

Someone mentioned they wanted an EE. I have a bunch if anyone wants some please let me know. They should be able to be sexed by now, they are about 8 wks old. They are black and barred and may lay a more olive egg than blue. They are a cross of a cuckoo rooster (whose parents are golden cuckoo marans hen x lavender ameraucana rooster) over black ameraucana hens.

Also have a pair of pet quality serama's available and a serama cockerel.

Anyone interested, please PM me!

This is the boy I'm picking up from Dawn next weekend. He's an Appenzeller Spitzhauben/EE cross! I'm getting him to protect the girls...they're such space cadets when they're out in the yard!

Now I'm kinda wondering what kind of babies he'd make with my EEs, RIR, Black Aussie, Buff Orps, Welsummer, and GLW?! Should I forgo buying chicks just to see if one of my own girls goes broody and hatches some of her own chicks? Sounds like an adventure!
Congrats Jess, of the chicks Dawn had, he would have been my pick too if I were looking for a cockerel. Handsome fellow!

It would definitely be interesting to see his babies, and what color eggs would get produced by the offspring.

Thanks! I'm dying to go get him too! Too bad I have to wait 8 more days...I'm a very impatient woman!
