Ogress is on top of the hill in North Bend.....just above where that fruit cake hid in his bunker after doing in his family..........and she has had constant issues with Yogi !!
And herds of elk right on the front porch, and deer on the back porch.
Very wild there.
maybe she can post some pics !
About 2 miles east of the bunker, same elevation.

Speaking of Yogi, we all went for a walk Monday evening when Don came home from work since the weather was so nice. We were walking down a trail when Yogi started growling at us. We could not see Yogi, but Yogi saw us and he was close! A neighbor whose property is maybe 1/8 mi from the trail spotted him in her yard a couple days earlier and got a great photo which she posted on her FB.

I was lagging behind due to my leg, and I was gagging on my tongue which is currently swollen with thrush. I spit into the woods and heard 2 growls when I did so. I was not certain what it was, but bear was the first thing that popped into my mind. I talked loudly and hurried to catch up with everyone, but I did not run. Alex then stopped to pick up a stick to play with. He had not heard the growl, and I did not mention it, hoping it was just in my head. He paused at the side of the trail to examine the sticks and we heard 3 more growls but much closer this time. Alex started yelling "Bear!" and he ran toward us (we were only 15 feet in front of him). Don was trying to tell us it was something else, but we all walked very fast to get back to the road. We never saw the bear, but could hear something big crunching through the brush (thick with alder and giant Sword Ferns)

The photos of the elk and such are on an old computer which I have not copied over yet to this one, but if you click on "My Coop" and scroll down, you will see some of the wildlife we have here. Last year I posted photos (not on "My Coop" ) of the rangers out here with their bear dogs, coincidentally an hour after a bobcat got one of my hens. There were 2 dog teams, one on either side of my property tracking the bears and I think they caught 2. Before we knew the bears were right by the property, Alex was convinced it was a neighbor dog who got the hen, so he went out searching for them with his paintball gun. Not sure if you remember that post, it was about a year ago, but Alex went hunting in the woods for the dogs just outside our fence with the paintgun (where the bears were being tracked an hour or two later). He did not see the bears, the dogs, nor the bobcat, but he did find a lone male elk which he shot at!

@FWJess

You asked about 2 coops and one run, to house separate flocks.

I do this with three coops. Most of the time the birds return 'home'. Once in a while a hen will 'move' permanently. I have what I would call a "backyard flock" meaning that while I have roosters (3), I am not worried about breeding true. If you had only one rooster you would not have to worry about roosters getting along with each other. Next spring I will begin a breeding program to produce Hambars (auto-sexing, true breeding, dual purpose) This will mean I will need to build some breeding pens. (coops and runs that hold three to five hens and one roo).

Here's a picture of my current set up : https://picasaweb.google.com/110714...key=Gv1sRgCKe6jKPthuaMzQE#5742376240494277474

The un-painted (DW is slacking :D ) in the left corner of the run is my current 'jail'. I put broody hens there until they get back to work! It will be a breeder pen in the spring. You can just make out the electric-poultry fence. It surrounds about a half acre of pasture. The charger can handle 5 sections of fence, I currently have two. Plenty of room to add a duck pond :)

See you tomorrow :)

Not going to be able to catch up this morning, "sigh". But wanted to say good morning to everyone before I head off to work!
Have a wonderful day!

I have a guy interested in my roosters but I have 3 9 week olds any suggestions on how to transport them? I live so far out I was going to meet him somewhere.
I may be wrong, but I've always transported in cardboard boxes. I've known people who use dog and cat crates and even one who put a blanket down in her trunk and transported that way.

Really? I've heard the BCM aren't all that friendly. I had one BCM roo who killed an EE. He didn't stay here long.
You can have mean cock birds (and hens) in any breed.
The important thing is to realize that the mean cock bird's Mother is responsible for his temper & attitude.
A sweet hen will make a sweet son.
A mean hen, will make a mean son.
If you get a mean cockerel, look at his mother.
Most Marans are very nice, but like I said, you can get mean males in any breed, even silkies !

OK, our Serama pics:

Here is our whole group of 7 Serama's, plus our Salmon Faverolle rooster from Cloverleaf. His pen is soooooooooooooo close to being done! Need one more day to work on it and out he goes!

This is our "Golden Laced" roo "Goldy" hatched out from stock we got from RedReiner and Jbear.

Goldy's pretty laced chest!

This is our "Wheaton" pullet hatched out from the same RedReiner/Jbear combo stock.

Oops! Hit post too soon. Wasn't quite done yet!!!

That is Frizz on the left and Wilfred again. We had 5 Serama's hatch from eggs we ordered from Castle Delight Serama's, and we were lucky enough to get this one roo and 4 pullets!

Another shot of Wilfred and Frizz with others behind.....

Frizzle pullet Lizz on right with Goldy on left.

Another shot of Lizz.

My favorites are the two tricolor pullets and this white/black one in the middle. The white/black one is Snowflake and this tricolor one is Brownie.

This is the other tricolor, Truffle. Just love their coloration. And they are soooooooooo tiny!!!

And because he's sharing the coop, gotta include some of White Locks, our Fav rooster from Cloverleaf! Jeanine, let me know what you think of him!!!
I LOVE Truffle....so many colors !
Looking at these pics is like a box of chocolates !

With much less calories !!

Quarantine is as important as you value your flock.. If you have a rare breed and a lot of $ invested then you will be very careful bringing in any live birds from outside.
If you have a small backyard flock that will not break the bank or heart if something comes in then you can be more laid back on the quarantine.
The reason for Quarantine is 2 things....
Preventing the new stressed bird from passing anything to your flock.
And controlled introduction without the new bird being attacked by the entire flock.
First thing is a simple Quarantine where your birds do not have access or can come in any contact with the new bird/s
Length of time is based on your judgment, experience and how much your worried about your current flock.
Second is after quarantine is introduction but with a barrier so they get to know each other.
Again Length of time is based on your judgment, experience and how your current flock reacts to the new one.
Third step is to put the new one in the coop at night with the current flock.
You will want to do this when you can be there first thing in the morning so that if the flock attacks you can rescue.
This also depends on how worried you are about the new bird/s, how big the coop is and if they have space to run/hide...
Hope this helps

And always have the necessary medications on hand !
I keep Corid here 24/7, as well as various antibiotics, syringes & needles & wormers .
I have found, in the past, that it can take a few days at best to locate meds you suddenly need, and by then, alot of birds can be infected or dead.
It pays to read up on diseases as well, and bookmark web sites descibing each so you have quick references.

Yeah yeah...I just hate these neighborhood cats. They're always in our backyard drinking from the creek. Of course it's his backyard, but they were here first. I'm sick of having to jump up from whatever I'm doing to go rescue him! Yep, he's fixed for sure! I'd never keep an unaltered animal.

Unfortunately, a cat still smells like a cat regardless if it is altered.
I had neighborhood cats chasing & beating up my female 'fixed' cats, and my vet explained to me that she still smells like a female cat regardless that she is nuetered.
So the chasing continued until we trapped the feral males.
