Today has started out to be a pretty good day to be a beekeeper. First I went to remove a colony that had moved into a wood duck house. They were about 16' up a tree. I was able to loosen the box and slide a bee bag over the entire thing. Once I got it home I did the carve out and installed in a hive. I was able to make up 5 frames with what the bees had.
Then while I was putting the hive in the field I figured that I would check the 3 dead boxes. What a surprise to find that 2 of 3 have renters.

Awesome!

Thanks. I have to ask hubby on it. Right now I can't drive very far on my own as my motion sickness has been in full swing and even scrolling on the computer hurts my head. So he is my transport for much beyond Puyallup/Orting/Lewis McCord.

I really should go to base and see my doctor about it. I've had a big issue since I got this cold a month ago. All that nose blowing did something in my ears, and I have always had an issue anyway. The trip over to Umatilla was horrid for me. Then we had to go between Umatilla and Kennewick for shopping and the baby shower. OMG, I've never felt so bad as Sunday when the sun was so bright there. Hubby likes to keep it ice cold in the truck which helps me, but Mom doesn't do that cold.

You asked about 2 coops and one run, to house separate flocks.

I do this with three coops. Most of the time the birds return 'home'. Once in a while a hen will 'move' permanently. I have what I would call a "backyard flock" meaning that while I have roosters (3), I am not worried about breeding true. If you had only one rooster you would not have to worry about roosters getting along with each other. Next spring I will begin a breeding program to produce Hambars (auto-sexing, true breeding, dual purpose) This will mean I will need to build some breeding pens. (coops and runs that hold three to five hens and one roo).

The un-painted (DW is slacking ) in the left corner of the run is my current 'jail'. I put broody hens there until they get back to work! It will be a breeder pen in the spring. You can just make out the electric-poultry fence. It surrounds about a half acre of pasture. The charger can handle 5 sections of fence, I currently have two. Plenty of room to add a duck pond

Here is our whole group of 7 Serama's, plus our Salmon Faverolle rooster from Cloverleaf. His pen is soooooooooooooo close to being done! Need one more day to work on it and out he goes!

That is Frizz on the left and Wilfred again. We had 5 Serama's hatch from eggs we ordered from Castle Delight Serama's, and we were lucky enough to get this one roo and 4 pullets!

My favorites are the two tricolor pullets and this white/black one in the middle. The white/black one is Snowflake and this tricolor one is Brownie.



This is the other tricolor, Truffle. Just love their coloration. And they are soooooooooo tiny!!!




And because he's sharing the coop, gotta include some of White Locks, our Fav rooster from Cloverleaf! Jeanine, let me know what you think of him!!!

GAHHH!!!

Too many pretty colored Seramas! I just know I'm not going to be satisfied with my 4 little babies - those little birds come in too many colors and of course, now I'm kicking myself because I chose not to have any eggs from frizzle pens. So this is how it happens - LF coop is full and now I'm collecting Silkies and Seramas because really - how much trouble could some little birds be? Right? Except that now I'll need to clear out my garage for the Seramas! When will it ever end? I need to get to a Chickens Anonymous meeting. DH is going to have my head. I can't believe he's been as nice as he has been so far!
VERY pretty babies WA4HMom - and of course, you can never go wrong with those Faverolles - still my favorite rooster coloring!

Does anyone around the Tacoma/Olympia area have any Wheaten Ameraucana eggs or chicks for sale?

My husband really likes the look of the roosters and I just like ameraucanas. I love their beards and look.

Since we have the large EE broody, I was thinking might as well use her. I don't really want to hatch out eggs from my buff silkie/EE rooster, even though he is a very good boy, and would rather get some purebred that aren't as small. We're talking about picking up a couple brahma pullets from the feed store because we like those looks, but I don't want a ton of them.

CowGirlGrace has Wheaten Ameraucanas. She doesn't post her much these days but has pretty birds. She's just out past Gig Harbor.

I put out baited rat traps and rat zappers around my coop on Sunday. Does't look like the ratties are going for the bait, and the only thing I've caught in the zapper was a deer mouse. I know I have roof rats. I have seen them come down the hill in the evenings. I think roof rats must be smarter than Norway Rats, or at least they are a whole lot more cautious.

I love all the beautiful chicken pictures; that bantam Favorelle and the hen near him are gorgeous!

The 3 week old chicks in my coop with the adoptive mamma cuckoo marans are doing great. I hope my friend takes them back when she returns from Oregon. Whenever I getmore chickens for myself, I think I will want more marans. They are the friendliest, calmest broodies while Broody Ameracaunas are psycho. I currently have a bunch of broodies: 1 BCM, 1 cuckoo marans, 3 Barnevelders, 2 blue Ameracaunas, 1 orpington, and 2 cochins (1 is a bantam). This is seriously cutting into egg production.

Okay that bear sound scared the heck out of me. I would NOT want to hear that near me while I was out walking!

My year old BCM has gone broody this month and I have discovered the same as you. She is still the sweetest broody I've ever seen! Whereas my Light Sussex was mean and would peck at me if I tried to move her, Bijou our BCM lets me pet her, reach under her for the eggs others have laid while she was up eating or drinking and never growls at me when I dump her out of the nest insisting that she get up for awhile. If I'd thought sooner I would have gotten her some eggs but with 14 chicks in the brooder I think I have enough babies for now. We're not adding anymore LF to our flock.

Have I told you all how I store my chickens' feed? I'm so excited! About a month ago I picked up 2 different sizes of THESE plastic storage vaults, the largest one and one of the smaller ones. They.are.awesome! The largest one (pricey, but worth it, it's airtight and watertight) I just found out today holds ***80***lbs (YES! 80 POUNDS!) of Scratch & Peck! That means I can buy in bulk without worrying about the grains going bad before I use them, and they'll stay even fresher in there than the bags they come packaged in! Pretty awesome if you ask me. My mom had one for cat food storage and I loved it so much at her house I decided I needed them for the chickens. I keep scratch in the smaller one, along with several packages of asstd things like grit, antibiotics, treats, etc. And no, I'm not associated with Petsmart or Vittle Vault
