Well, I just dropped the kids off for their last day of school. Finally. They have a 2-hour day today. Seems silly, but the school can count 2 hours as a full day.

I'm looking forward to having my 10-year-old home and helping me finish the coop and build the run. The run is an easy build, but I need someone to hold long boards up while I screw them together. He's matured significantly in the 9 weeks we've had chickens. He's seen Drama's leg injury and what it took to get her walking again. Then, he was in the house during the dog attack, and he knows we almost lost Rhodie, the bird that was in the dog's mouth. I think he's finally beginning to understand responsibility and the importance of helping out. He seems excited to help me build the run. He wants the chickens in a safe environment as much as we do. He has high functioning autism so it's really nice to see him begin to grasp the concepts of caring for others. I didn't expect a tiny flock of backyard chickens to have the impact it has on any of my children. Such a good thing!

OK first THIS NOT ABOUT RELIGION ! ! ! Just intended as a funny. Please don't anybody twist it.

Sorry Dave I can't believe none of them warned you.

Thanks, you're awesome. The last time I tried to be a part of this thread I asked some chicken questions and got referred to different threads by cut and paste. I guess I didn't comment on mother-son-DIL drama that was going on then, to be noticed or cared about, when I left. Oh well. I have been really welcomed on all the other threads.

Also, I am seeing urban chickeneers being picked on. I am not understanding why. I see it on The Chicken Whisperer Show as well. Yes I have to fight raccoons and martins, but urban folks can't really set a trap for hungry, homeless people. True story. You should check out The Chicken Whisperer on blogtalkradio. My husband won a set of dishtowels with chickens embroidered on them, during Fun Friday. He's at 9 am, but I think he is on book tour this week, not exactly sure.

I am going to be asking for your help, horticulture lady. I am so far behind on my garden, due to a broken rototiller, that I am aiming for a winter garden, which I know nothing about. I am also really interested in aquaculture, is that the right word, where you use fish and their poo, and shoot at raccoons?
RainWolf has been working on a hydroponic water/fish/fish poo type garden.
I have been waiting to see how it is going.
She was going to use crawfish instead of fish, though....interesting, no ?

Hope your hatch is going well!

Well it is go to the dump day...and hopefully not get caught with the dead we have to dispose of, they have a sign there that says:
We do not accept toxic waste, tires or Batteries or dead animals.
I noticed right off that their sign did not say "Dead Birds"

So, if I do get caught......

Actually DH is going to the dump, I am still standing gurad.
After all, right out in the yard is a chicken tractor full of tasty butter-ball cornish...............easy targets.
Still think it is weird how Mink take the head or tear the throat out but do not eat the bird.

We are going to try to get an equity loan on our CA property so we can finsih the house here faster.
So...have to contact the realtor, relist & have her do an appraisle.....then what ?

I haven't heard of that show. I'm looking forward to listening to it.

I'll be happy to help, but I'll be honest, I'm still trying to master the whole winter garden process. Feel free to call me or e-mail me. I'm set up for cold frames, not that I've used them though. My problem is more that if it's really cold and wet, I tend to hibernate. LOL! I grow everything from seed, so I do have to start early on many of my vegetables. I start them indoors using florescent lights (mix a warm and a cool lamp in a cheap florescent shop light - no need to buy expensive grow lights). Someday I'll have year-round lettuce out in a cold frame... when I'm not too lazy to run out and garden in the cold winter rain. Until then, I'm content to start seeds indoors over the winter.

I have no experience with aquaculture (farming fish, shrimp, etc.). Fish poo is great for the garden though. I always use my dirty fish tank water in the garden.

Our waste disposal site takes my dead birds. As long as they are wrapped up tight and is not over 30 lbs.

Almost everything here goes up to the waste to energy plant where they burn everything and send out toxic chemicals to infect and mutate the cells of the people who live in the surrounding area................................
