IS THAT NOT WHAT WAS EXPECTED ! ! !
If we don't want to hear what others do so that we may each try to make our own choices then why ask and why should others share said info?

It was just said rudely is all. I'm glad to have heard opinions either way but her post was rude, plain and simple, and generally I try to give people benefit of doubt when reading for tone, etc, but hers wasn't nicely worded in the slightest. All she had to say was "Some people might try dumping unhealthy birds at the auction so be careful" instead of "Are you trying to pick up a bunch of diseased birds?!" Clearly I'm just asking for opinions and hers was rudely put. Oh well. I'm still here...she's not for some odd reason.

Ooh yea, I was going to say, the wind has been exceptional even for the Tri cities!! I only live 50 miles from there, and yea, just sayn
RIDICULOUS!!!
Lily has been keeping in touch via Facebook so I've kind of gotten "headlines" about her various activities and seen a lot of photos of the places she's toured while she was there. She's been to wineries, to Parma where HUGE Parmesan cheese wheels are made, a place in Tuscany where Balsamic Vinegar is produced, and a weekend in Rome, where we visited when she was 14, so she was able to visit some of our favorite places again.

One of her lengthiest stories so far though has been celebrating her 20th birthday in Florence. After a night of dancing at a club with some girlfriends, they met a group of "beautiful, young French musicians" who were hanging out in the Piazza in front of her apartment. The boys played Happy Birthday for her and then serenaded the girls with a lot of other songs and my DD had a sweet 2 day flirtation with "Jule" who she's Facebook friends with now. (It was all quite innocent - she does have a steady bf back in Pullman who she was missing.)
She sent me a link to his page and he is an adorable, Euro-hip boy.

Along with getting a good education, earning credits toward her major, and making good friends from the program at WSU, I guess a brief flirtation in Italy is something for a young woman's diary as well. It's the stuff movies are made of.

I am looking forward to hearing more about the more academic portion of her visit once she returns home!

P.S. Hey CL! In keeping with the theme, I named our young Olive Egger from you "Toscano" for the olive oil brand. Sure hope she lives up to the name when she starts producing eggs!

I started all the birds on the bleach solution this morning. They have been on vitamins/electrolytes for a few days and were all acting perfectly healthy (as is Princess, yay!!) but they were all having watery poops like someone posted about a couple days ago. So weird! All poops seemed normal but had excess water all around them, and it's totally NOT hot here so that isn't the problem. Hopefully whatever is causing the water poo will be taken out by the bleach water. I had to figure out a different ratio than the 2c/gal solution (and of course, using only 2Tbsp of that per gallon in the waterer) because my only small container for the solution holds 24 ounces, LOL! So yeah, if you need to make the solution in 24oz bottle, add 3oz bleach for the solution.

If I were you - I'd find the breed I liked, or wanted to sell, and get them from good stock. Ask here, or go to the hatching eggs forum. The folks around this thread have some beautiful chickens

I don't want to keep the chicks. We're very happy with our 3 pullets. The ideal situation would be to find someone who had eggs and wanted us to incubate chickens for them. It would purely be a science experiment for the kids. We just want to incubate a few (no more than 6 eggs) and hoping at least 2 of them will hatch (so no baby chick is alone - that would be sad).

If there is anybody here that would let us incubate a few chicks for you, and would be willing to take the chicks after they are a few days old off our hands, we would love it! They wouldn't be anywhere near our tiny flock at all. They'd be incubated in the house, and the chicks would be kept in a brooder in the house until they were delivered to their new home.

I'd do that -- but I think I'm too far away? (Yakima) I'd be happy to give you a dozen or so - nothing special, just back-yard mutts :) I get a pretty good hatch rate. I typically set 14, move 12 to the hatcher 18 days later, and get 10 chicks.

The last couple of days, each one of my three went through a day of diarrhea. Not water around it, just liquid poo. And it was dark looking. Next day back to hard little poops. Not sure what exactly caused it. Except, this morning, I noticed my beautiful garden bed of "Love Lies Bleeding" plants have been decimated.

I kid you not, there's like 30 of those plants in that garden bed, and all of the leaves have been pretty much eaten. I am now growing stems. I'm so glad I worked so hard to grow perfect little specimens to enrich the chicken's diets. Not!

According to Wikipedia the Love Lies Bleeding plant is edible, but I still wonder if 3 birds eating that much may have kicked off diarrhea. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amaranthus_caudatus

Do your birds have access to plants that might be causing problems for them?

Anybody have any magic recipe for getting skunk smell out of your yard if you know exactly where the spray is?? I know how to get the smell off a dog, but.....

You won't spend $20 for a 13 week pullet? What are you looking for? a bunch of diseased cross breeds someone is dumping? I will SELL my extra cockerels at an auction but I would not BUY an auction bird if my life depended on it. Cheap is CHEAP and you get what you pay for. You have no way of knowing where that bird came from and WHY. Why take the chance of introducing disease and parasites into your flock. Spend the extra and get good quality stock from a reputable breeder. You will most likely get a guarantee also. You won't get that at an auction. If you do lower your expectations and get an auction bird make sure you quarantine it for 30 days.

Sigh, now I am reminded why I am absent. Hi all, blessings and adios. I'll check back in in the Fall. Have a great Summer!
