Well, I thought Buttercup was 100% when we left for Oregon on Friday, but she was back to laying on her side and not breathing well again today.

She died an hour ago.....the family taking care of my birds sent me a message today.

Quit that...bad enabler...no soup for you! (Or BBQ!) I just don't know where I'd put them. DH is just about had it with chickens. I guess I could house them in the rabbit hutch in the run, but they wouldn't be terribly happy in there probably.

Am I just going to have to come to grips that some of my chickens are less than personable and will always hate me? LOL Some of them really flip out when I try to pet and/or hold them, and these are the ones I have had since they were day olds! Particularly my RIR, Welsummer, and GLW really despise being touched. It's weird.

Best thing to do is grab a chair and a book and sit with em... have some treats and hand em out when they get close.. (toss on ground if they will not get close yet and bring it closer and closer)
My rooster eats out of my hands and I've had to smack him a couple times cuz he jumps up to my hands to find food.... he is too big for that! tho he does not know that.....
anyhow just bring em in closer and closer and do not attempt to pet or hold yet... when they start sitting on your feet put treats on your knee... like pieces of bread.
Then they will start hopping up... still "ignoring them" slowly allow them to eat from your hand, then slowly try to touch them with that hand with food.... you get the idea....

Big thing is to not scare them... once they scare they become stand offish....

Goliath has had his feet stepped on a few times cuz he runs between my legs when it is feed time.. but as long as I don't scare him, he will still run between my feet lol
I still can pick him up with no issues....

My crowing roosters refuse to be picked up by me in fear that they will be crated for the night. But they all sit on my feet for food.

All my chicks get handled from start every day so I have not have to do the slow way in a long time... it might take a few weeks or a month or 2 depending on how skittish etc.

My Leghorns (they are to be very flighty skittish birds) will sit on my shovel waiting for worms... or under my hands when I'm digging around... sigh flighty my tucus...

BTW I still have some TINY Bantam Ameraucana's some black and some blues...

They are about the size of my Serama's right now... dunno how much bigger they will get but they are already 4+ months old....

Quit that...bad enabler...no soup for you!  I don't know much about bantams. Right now my coop is pretty maxed out? I have two 5' roosts and a dozen LF birds! I don't think I have a place for any more I would love them though, somehow I got a pretty soft heart towards Ameraucanas!

Well not sure if you are talking about fiberglass, polycarbonate  or lexan. But should be able to cut all of those with a fine tooth circular saw OR  a good sharp utility knife.

 OH so how do I tell what kind it is, I got 12 panels of it for free off of craigs list.

I'm telling ya a hand saw with metal hacksaw blade is the only way... unless fiberglass, then a cicular saw will work...
I lost a full 8' panel due to splitting... so I tried everything to make it faster then by hand... all of them made chips, cracks, splits etc... the only reliable way was by hand sigh.... I had to do 15 panels by hand

Does it work to have a coop/run with secondary coop/hutch in the run, and will the different birds return to their respective "homes" each night?

Exactly. And if you need tranquilizers for your dogs, don't wait until the day of to ask you vet about it...

We used to have to tranquilize our dog. It was heartbreaking. And, since we "get" to hear the fireworks at the Casino all month long, our poor dog spent a lot of time on tranquilizers. Even my birds are nervous by it. The past few days the Casino fireworks have been bad.
