When my chicken quacks, it makes everyone laugh. It's fun to have a weird bird.

Pullets will "practice" laying before they start laying, so if she is under a bush doing this you might want to check there when she does start laying

or you can grab her and tuck her into a nest box with a fake egg. Hoping she gets the idea....

Mine are 12 weeks old. Right now we have the egg boxes closed off with wood. When should I take that down so they can practice? I don't want them sleeping in them.

Do I need 2 eggs boxes for 3 chickens? Or can I use one for storage? I have been told my Light Brahma may not lay until she is a year old, so I'm guessing I'll just have 2 laying for a while.

We're a new chicken family in Shoreline. Love all the advice and tips on the site. We have 3 hens: Thomas a Buff Orp, Henrietta an Ameraucana, and Henny a Wellsummer. We also ended up with a roo - Bunny the Black Australorp. 16-ish weeks old now, and a ton of fun, except for our now crowing Bunny, who needs a new home.

I hope you find a new home for Bunny. Such a cute name for a chicken.

Entiant Chelan

We had to stay in Chelan an extra day because both of the roads were closed off when we wanted to leave on Thursday. When we left yesterday, one of the roads out of there was still closed off. I think they had the fire contained though - at least that's what the park ranger thought.

Hi from Sammamish!

I am very new. I don't even have my chicks yet, but I am finishing the coop and yard now. I am looking for some locally hatched chicks to start my flock with. I want nice friendly egg layers that will not attack me like the rooster my mom had years ago. I was looking at Black Australorp, Delaware, Sex Links, or Speckled Sussex as my top 4 breeds, I also love the Lavender Cochin, and the Plymouth Rock. My husband has limited me to 5 hens (for now). ; ) What would be good choices for friendliness and egg production? Any young chicks available around Western Washington? Thank You for any information.

Good for you for building your coop before you got chicks. We just got our girls moved into theirs last week - when they were 11 weeks old.

Thankfully, their brooder was huge for them (a wire dog crate meant for a very large dog).

When 2 of my kids are off at camp, my 3rd child and I may build a Silkie coop and run with the extra supplies we have. We're thinking ahead this time, we wouldn't be getting Silkies until next year.

Our family would be willing to incubate for you if you found the eggs. They'd be straight run though.

It sounds like maybe time for a little education! I do not intend this to be harsh just trying to help others understand. There is no reason for metal to end up in landfills. See that is what recycling centers are for and that is also what scrap haulers (like myself) make some money with. For a few little pieces most centers won't pay but will accept free. ANY scrapper that is any good will gladly accept ANYTHING METAL! I get a lot of people say things like well you probably don't want this or that. My answer is always the same IF it is metal I WILL make it go away if I can get it loaded.

That's good to know. I'm not exactly sure where, in our area, we would take things. We usually just wait until each spring when the city does the spring clean-up. We set out everything (and the city will not pick up everything - lots of metal items will be left behind). Scrappers will drive through the neighborhoods and take everything metal - long before the city gets to it. Which is great, because many of the items we set out, the city would not have picked up anyway.

This is my first experience with any breeds besides sexlinks, and those barred rocks..their voices are SO deep...

My girls are 13 weeks and just yesterday they got in their new boxes and played with the pine shavings so yes, I'd take the doors off.
I'd also wait to see if they all use one box to lay in. They probably will but it's hard on eggs. I'm hoping my girls will spread out (6 hens/3 boxes).
