Quote: I use fans. A couple of small ones. I just got one that is 12 inch tall but only 5 inches wide so I can put it in the corner of the coop. I also put one outside the small window I have on one side of the coop. I also have a big window that I leave open almost year round. But if there is a way to keep the air moving they seem to do better.

I actually saw misters on the silkie thread. From some of those areas that are in the 100's. I don't know if you need something like that for this temp, but putting ice in the waterers is also good.

What's with my birds being SO terribly hot in the coop tonight?? Inside the coop it was no more than 70 degrees when they went in to roost and they all sat on the roosts with their mouths open

I hope it cools off enough for them tonight! Poor things. They were pretty miserable for a while in the late afternoon but finally when the sun went behind the trees and I hosed off all the grass and surrounding large bushes (under which they take shelter all day long) they seemed happier. Poor kiddos. I just don't know how to keep them cooler though...one of their poops on the patio tonight seemed pretty watery as well, like the bird was too hot, but I'm already refreshing their waterers 3-4 times a day with cool water and hosing off the coop and run a few times a day too. I feel bad I can't do more!
I saw a stand mister at home depot that hooks up to the hose and can be placed anywhere. $39. (I think)
I am going to add ice to the waterers today.

You can always hook up a red neck A/C unit...a fan with a block of ice in front of it

I've also read you can just fill up two liter bottles and freeze them, and then leave them laying around the yard, and if they get really hot, give them a dip to cool them off.

(I've never had to do that with any of ours...but we've got lots of shade and are not in the hot part of WA.)

It will be this week sometime....
depending on the time and what days people want to meet up together

so far you can pick a day

* I have to be home to work from 230pm on and have wed/thurs off atm.
I figured we could all meet in the parking lot where the berries are.. bring chairs, buckets, drinks etc....
(berries are on a "no chemicals" campus that is protected by wetlands so in essence organic.)
this does sound fun. We are getting ready for a horse show and camp but might be able to come.

No joke, last night I took a rotating full size fan and hung with with an S hook on the ceiling! They did much better after that. I also flipped the light on and gave them all water at 11pm and they were seriously going at that water! I feel awful for them :( They seem OK so far today but this afternoon is going to be hotter. I might go to WalMart and get a mister for the run, since 2 of the birds won't leave the run/coop (the newbies) yet. They'll go out and lay in the shade for a few minutes at a time and then come right back in the hot run. I'm definitely doing ice in the water today. The shyest bird won't let me come near her though, and I never saw her drink yesterday. She had to have drank something or she'd have died with how warm it was, but I feel bad I can't direct her over to the fresh cold water! I've had them 8 days and they still haven't joined the flock in the yard, just to roost at night :(

Okay, people...we need a little perspective, here. If the people back east read about our heat worries when we've reached a shocking 80 degrees, they're going to come out here and beat us with our own egg baskets! For them, it's been in the 100-110 degree range with 95% + humidity. Our problem is not so much the temperature itself, as it is the rapid change in temperature. We're kind of like moles coming out of their holes and blinking in the sudden sunlight!

My hens have been pretty happy hanging out in the shade. They especially like the cool dirt under the arborvitae. (Lots of spiders there, too, for a quick snack!) I put them in their run before dusk, and they hopped into the cooled-down coop to roost. Worked out well.

I figure that when we lived in Bakersfield (helpful hint--DON'T move to Bakersfield), we kept the AC in our house set to 83 degrees, and we thought it was pleasant. Yeah, we're now acclimatized to western Washington, but we'll all probably make it.

I'll join in, if work schedule doesn't interfere. But it almost always interferes.

I have one of those misters that look like a blue coled up hose. You attach a hose to it and it mists out the top. I was given 2 of them several years ago. I don't know why. Gave one to a neighbor for her grandkids. Forgot I had the other till I was cleaning up the shed a few weeks ago. It's free to whomever.
