Does the rhubarb have to be red to pick and use? We have lots of large stalks but they're still green.
Not all rhubarb turns red. There are green stalked varieties as well. If yours was ging to be red it should have started out that way. Go ahead and harvest!

So...not little by any means. He could whoop most dogs' butts!

I have rhubarb in the backyard if anyone want free rhubarb any time. I don't do a thing with it, it just keeps coming back :) were off to the splash park again, though I hear thunder and we might not get wet, oh well we can use the other dry park too :)

If no once comes to get it I would love to have it... *problem is I don't drive and your far away :(

No it does not have to be red, there are different varieties some never turn red and some are pink and some are very dark red.

Some varieties have green or blush stalks. Tastes the same.

Let them ripen and turn red. Stay away from the leaves, they contain oxalic acid which is poisonous. The stalk also contain it but in very small quantities (More in the green stalk I think).
Apart from strawberry and rhubarb cobbler/pie, it makes a fabulous wine!
Oooh, on the way back from the vet, I think I'll pick some up for cobbler this weekend. Yummy!:drool

The stalks do not have to be red they can be pink or even green. We pick them when the plant gets to be big and normally get 2 or 3 crops from one plant. I have 8 plants here..... We can rhubarb sauce to use on ice cream or deserts. We also have a foodsaver vacuum sealer and we go pick the stalks... cut up in 1-2" pieces, put in freezer bag and vacuum seal, freeze until ready to make sauce, jam, custard or pie!

Rhubarb leaves are poisonous to people and animals, I do not grow any in the back yard where the critters are and make sure to trim the stalk from the leaf. The green stalks can be just the variety. some plants will throw stalks of all colors. The rule is the leaves have to be nice green color (not yellow) and the leaves and stalk has to be firm not soft. When you cut the stalk it needs to be solid inside, if you see air pockets it means it is "past" and will not taste as good. Still edible but not what you want.

Oh my gosh, I have been listening to rolling thunder all morning with no dark clouds or rain. I thought it was odd, but my DH is down the street a few miles on one of our job sites on 132nd in Mill Creek tearing down the Mcdonalds there (so they can build a new one) and he said about an hour ago that the rain was just starting. Yet still none here.
I will be busy today, I have to get the cake made for my DD's 10th B-day party on Sunday. I would make it tomorrow but we are going to the gun show in Monroe in the morning and then out to go shooting later that day! Boy do I LOVE to go shooting.
I spent most of my day out side yesterday in my "barn", it's really a shed but oh well, finnishing the rest of my multi pen. I origianly built it when I had a Oberhalis doe that I was expecting to kid, but then she had a falts pregnancy. Any ways, this will be my quarentine area, a grow out pen, and a broody pen. It is houseing my two Moma's and their shared 14 chicks right now.
Speeking of them, I am not sure how to handle this but Moma Fancy and Kristine have been in the same pen the whole 21 day together. They have had no problems with each other for the first few days, but now when all the chicks are awake and running around Fancy (SLW) attacks Kristine (Cochin Mix). The chicks all tend to stay with Fancy most of their awake time then some run to Kristine to sleep. When somthing scares them both moms squish together in the corner and help eachother prtect the chicks, and they sleep that way to. I think Fancy just wants all the chicks to her self. She does a great job with them all. But I don't want to take Kristine away from her chicks. What do you think?
well while I was out there I took a few more pics ( a few for me is about 200, can you imagine what a lot is!?) So I figured I would share a couple with ya, now most are of Fancy because Kristine is not very happy with me sticking a camera in her face and turns her little fluffy rump right to my face! Goofy girl.

Now this is not a great pic but just to show you Fancy with all the chicks, althoughsome are under her.

It is so cute when they get on moma's back.

I really like when the background is out of focus, but that's just me.

Three chicks hiding in mom's butt fluff! So cute.

I like clouds too.
Sorry for so many pics, I can't help myself.

It sucks that we are having such a hard month for our people and pet families. I hope every one is ok, sorry for the loss of your dear kitty while you were gone. Other that that I hope everyone is doing well.

Also HELLO to all the newbies! So glad you could join us here.

Those of you who have linoleum on your coop floors - how is it affixed? For my last coop DH says it had self adhesive strips underneath. I got a scrap from my cousin yesterday and it does not. Do you staple? Nail it? Is there glue or some adhesive strips I can find at the hardware store? I am SO close to finishing my VF coop - I'm want to move the Silkies out of the house this weekend!
TIA!

This is so awesome that there's a thread for each state! What a great way to connect and meet new people who are nearby!

My friends aren't really "critter" people so they all kinda look at me like I'm crazy when I get all excited about something animal related. It's sad, I feel bad for them. Hehehehe.
Welcome! I'm pretty new to chickens myself (only had them a year). My mom-in-law used to live in Castle Rock. Beautiful scenery!!!

If you have some molding around you could put the linoleum down than but molding around the edges, that way you can change it. I only have tile in my brooder have to do a good clean out of the other coops and put linoleum down but thats how Im going to do when I get a chance.

I lost a chick to a hawk today. We were all outside, kids running, yelling, playing and all of a sudden out of nowhere darts down this small hawk and snatched up a baby FROM UNDER A TREE! less than 50 ft away from where a friend and I were sitting in the yard.
I got up and ran yelling, arms flailing, when I saw it coming down but I was too late
sad.png

Such an awful feeling watching it fly away
That's terrible! Sorry this happened to you.
