I am such an idiot! We had the most amazing thunderstorm here last night around 3am. It seemed to be right on top of us. It started pouring (here in the desert that is welcomed!) and it clicked that I had left the coop windows open (there's wire in front of them to keep predators out). Like a dummy, I decided to run out and close them. The coop is towards the back of our 2 acres. I made it into the coop and as I was going to go back and the lightening seemed to be all around, the realization of how stupid it was for me to go outside finally hit me. After I ran back into the house I kinda internally freaked out!!! I've never been worried about lightening storms until THAT one!

I have two pullets that need to go, they will be 3 months on the 23rd. What are they you ask they are black Copper Marans crossed with Black Orpington so the eggs will be on the darker side. One hen has copper on her hackles the other one not to much. Id just like a good home for them so not asking much. they both have feathers on the legs too. I also have to BCM roosters that need to go. Im going to take them all to the auction on Sat if I cant find a home so thats why Im not asking to much for them. They are all really nice birds.

I would like to see how your Silkie run turned out too Kim. DH and I finally cut and nailed down the linoleum today for our silkie coop. It's less than perfect, but with our mad skills I'm just glad it's in! Also got the hardware on the doors so I guess those babies will be moving in tomorrow.

Yep - I'm hoping that porcelain is a girl too Robin! I'm going to take a look at our situation in the next couple of days and I'll contact you. I'll bet those babies are filling up your brooder fast! My Silkie chicks are 9 weeks old tomorrow so obviously I haven't been in too much of a hurry to put them out in their coop. You should have a little bit of time to finish your coop. I'll miss having them readily accessible for a quick scoop and squeeze but I'm looking forward to having fewer birds in the house.

Oh! And Robin - do you need any linoleum for your coop floor? My sister gave me a nice big piece of pretty white with a square pattern and I have a lot left - plenty for your VF coop!

Those of you who have linoleum on your coop floors - how is it affixed? For my last coop DH says it had self adhesive strips underneath. I got a scrap from my cousin yesterday and it does not. Do you staple? Nail it? Is there glue or some adhesive strips I can find at the hardware store? I am SO close to finishing my VF coop - I'm want to move the Silkies out of the house this weekend!

We used "liquid nails" to stick it down. Seems to be working so far! We made a "people door" with no lip to make cleaning easy, and I used little nails to hold that edge down.

Me, too! Is it big? Or little?. I'm still trying to find "little" coop/ run examples. It seems many people keep their Silkies in large coops/ runs.

I'm heading over to seattle on Tuesday the 17th.
I can bring birds over.
I have many Cayuga Ducklings 2-6 weeks old. $14 each. easy duck breed, dual purpose, do not fly, great for slugs
Icelandic Chicks 1-3 weeks old $6 each great for free ranging. $10 for any females i could sort out. Mine have 2 different import bloodlines, my rooster is 7 months old and a direct import from iceland.

Light Sussex $20 for female and $10 for males. 2-5 weeks. they are growing fast and big. dual purpose breed from show quality bloodline, greenfires. calm and free range or confinement.
BLRW $10 sex still not determined

"Mutts" $3 straight run for 1-3 weeks. $10 for females $4 for males. they are a mix of my proven layer flock and are good in all weather. wellsummers, rir, marans, blue andulsian and easter egger, cochin, and other mixes.

OK so I am gonna throw myself under the bus. JUST FYI for some of you newbies. I see and hear lots of panic stories about locking the coop at night etc. Well for what it's worth (and I know many will disagree) I NEVER lock my birds in the coop at night. They are all contained in the coop/run. They are free to go to bed when they want and go out when ever there want in the morning. And just in case yer wonderin yes I do live in the country. In fact I live so far out in the styx that they have to pipe daylight to me! Yes we have yoddle dawgs, bears and BIG kitty cats. But anything that is gonna get a chicken dinner here will have to get into the run then fit through a chicken size door into the coop then get up 3' off the ground to pull the birds off the roost. By the time all that could happen I will probably already have delivered a lead injection and the problem would be solved. SSS ! ! ! That is how we do it here!

Heck the silkies and chicks all live in dog houses without doors at my place (but with a wind break). The layers have a chicken door opening with plastic flaps that keep the rain out. I shut them in the runs at night. They can come out whenever they like to the runs. The only birds I've lost are two to hawks in the middle of the day, and eight to a neighbors dog in the daytime. All were free ranging birds. I figure if a bear wants the chickens, it's getting them. Nothing is going to stop it unless I make it there in time with the gun.

Coyotes stay off the property where the dogs patrol up front. We've seen other dead predators on the main road. It's the DEER that worry me. Had a buck come after me last fall when I went out to let the birds out. Good thing the dogs came out with me. They came charging back and drove it off the property. And the dry weather has brought them back now. I've seen prints and had my cherry trees trimmed again.
