Wow you guys sure go fast in this thread.. I have been offline for a few days and been reading for 30 min and I'm still back on page 7805.. LOL I love it!

My heart goes out to all of you that have had a loss or illness both of furry and non furry family members. That is never a good thing for any one. In my work I have done a lot of end of life care and I was raised on a farm so I have seen and experienced lots of losses. The human (and non human) ability to heal with time and maybe even grow a bit from the love we hold on to from our lost loved one... always amazes me.... Hugs to all of you :)

So this week my Husband and daughter and I are in Blanchard Idaho on vacation...quiet out of the way place.. LOL we have to drive several miles to just get cell service. For the first time in over a year I had to buy STORE EGGS (shudders) they were awful.. So it made me look for a local egg supply.. and that has led me on a great adventure.. I'm in farm country here and the people are soooooooooooooooooooooooooo friendly.. When I told the family I bought my "Pastured raised Eggs " from on Saturday, that I had my own flocks back home and was always wanting to learn. The lady gave me names of other farms I could visit... So that's what I spent the afternoon doing... Was an awesome thing seeing how people are set up and different breeds. I had a blast!! I plan to do it again.. cant say the same for the hubby and kiddo although they learned too mostly that I'm not as crazy as they thought .

So when I get home I have 2 missions...
1) to find someone (wink wink) that "processes" their own fryers/broilers. That in exchange for some help would show me how its done.. I kept seeing the term "FREEZER CAMP" on some post ?????? wasn't sure the real meaning of that :) I used to help my father with our chickens but that was years and years ago.

2) To find out just where the grain I feed comes from and if it has any GM ingredients... That is a huge topic over here.. everyone I met asked me what I fed and I was ashamed to say I didn't know.

BY THE WAY HAVE I TOLD YOU ALL HOW DELIGHTED I AM TO OF FOUND THIS GROUP...I REALLY AM AND LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING TO KNOW YOU ALL BETTER :)

Sounds like a lot of fun visiting all the farms!

Freezer camp is indeed processing chickens for eating, several people here do this. We have a small group that has done it a couple times in our area, but others do it a couple times a year. I think Chickielady just processed a bunch, she's down south.

I feed our chickens Scratch & Peck non-GMO feed, just what I like to give them. Some folks prefer other brands, some folks make their own!

Welcome to the group!

No one wants chicks? Icelandic, Light Sussex (SQ) and BLRW?

Okay, maybe I'm not understanding this right, but if they are still chicks, how do you know they are show quality? Not all babies from SQ parents are SQ, or so I was informed.

The parents are show quality. Its still up to the person if it has the characteristics wanted in their breeding plan. I try to inform that the parents are from the greenfires import line. I havent seen any coronation chicks yet, I have one coronation hen. Sorry to confuse. Some chicks are almost 6 weeks old and growing big fast.

I think that SQ for eggs or chicks is used as short hand for "show potential" or "show quality parents".

Although, it might depend upon the breeder and how well they know their birds. I can tell you if a new Pomeranian gosling has promising show potential. I could tell you on the day they were whelped which of my Scottish Deerhounds could finish. But with my ducks, not so much and you will have to buy good bloodlines and then wait and see. Although a percentage of ducklings can be eliminated from consideration when they are hatched, picking out the winners from those that have potential is beyond my ability.

Is anyone else having problems with the editor? Every time I try to post, I have a "quote" from someone at the beginning (that doesn't show up unless I do a preview).

It's the same quote each time too.

I personally wouldn't order layers from a hatchery. I would buy local from a reputable breeder. Then one gets TRUE breeds not just something that resembles the breed. And you help support the local people.
Let me know someone locally that has 20-25 EE SEXED chicks that wants to sell them for $3-5chick. I could only find two chicks that I didn't have to drive more than 50 miles. I have a broody due in about a week, and figued I would just go for it, because I have so many relatives that want eggs, and we are going to set a few aunties up with coops this spring. None of my relatives are really worried about pedigrees. I have my fancy chickens for myself, and they don't value the broody hen like you and I.

Ah, I got it now. I bought some goslings from Holderread Waterfowl Farm, and while he said the parents were SQ he didn't guarantee the babies were; he suggested buying several to insure one was SQ.

Your posts are reminding me of the movie, Natural History of the Chicken, where a SQ breeder was asked to show the parent stock, he wouldn't and said that SQ birds don't necessarily come from SQ parents. Food for thought.
