As far as I know it's safe for both dogs and chickens to eat the poo that they do. It does gross me out, but I don't freak out over it. I have simply gotten very good at not letting any of them kiss though.

Apes at the zoo do the same thing. I just about lost my lunch once when an ape laid down a nice steamy patty, then picked it up and proceeded to eat his hot lunch.

Now, when the kids ask to see the apes, I dread it.

Is this normal? It seems strange to me but this is my first chicken family. Not surprisingly I am not having much luck finding anything on this topic. Any tips? Ignore it? Isolate Slim? Get more chickens? (Oh no! Not that!

I wish I could help, but I'm new, too. I only have three that are almost 15 weeks old. My 3 tend to stick together like glue. Everywhere one goes in the yard, the others follow. But, that could be the nature of a tiny flock. Although, my Light Brahma is frequently a loner at night time - sometimes she doesn't sleep on the roost. She seems to have issues in maneuvering, though. She is our clumsy bird.

Is there a process to freeze tomatoes? I've never heard of frozen tomatoes! Do you have to peel them or anything? Do you have to freeze them like berries (spread out on a tray until frozen, then bagged)?
I did the hot water dip and peeled them than yes froze them on a tray and into a plastic bag..

Thanks! I'll try that this year - if I have extra tomatoes again. I have 14 plants this year... although, they are way smaller than in years past. I was slow to transplant them because I was so busy with finishing the coop and building the run. Poor things were extremely root-bound by the time I transplanted them into the ground.

They're not going to grow as well, anyway. They got booted to the side yard where it isn't any where near as hot. Now that I have chickens, my back yard will no longer be over-run with tomato plants. In some ways, I'll miss my "jungle", as a friend once put it, in my back yard. I like to grow indeterminates -- and, in my back yard, where they have full sun exposure, they have gotten as tall as 7-8 feet. They never grow that tall in my side yard.

Today is day 2 that DD is going to Girl Scout Day Camp. It is at the same location we had Cub Scout Day Camp, although it is much, much smaller. It almost looked tiny compared to Cubs. Cub Camp pulls from the entire foothills district (Auburn, Algona, Pacific, Covington, and Maple Valley). There were 310 boys at Cub Camp, and more than twice that many volunteers.

It's nice to have a laid back camp to drop my daughter off to. It's not overwhelming to her. She's around boys so much, she's still trying to learn how to interact with little girls. When she does girly things at home, the boys give her grief, so she's all tom-boy at home.

I'm hoping for some sunny weather today. Youngest DS and I want to get started on building a 2nd chicken run. I think we're going to build it so we could use it as a silkie coop/run, if we choose, but we'll make it with large doors so our Brahma can maneuver through it easily, as well. DH insisted the main coop be on the side yard north of the patio so it was downwind. But, I can't see them over there if I'm in the house. This new run will be in a location where I can see them from the kitchen. I miss seeing them out my window.

We have extra hardware cloth from the first run and a friend, who is remodeling her house, has been passing scrap wood my way. This run shouldn't cost very much to build.

Well, I've gotta get going. Have a good day everyone.

Just another comment on Foxglove... in Washington, it is considered a noxious weed and is supposed to be destroyed. I know... it's pretty, but, I'm sure the state has it's reasons for classifying it as such.
It is not currently on the *state* noxious weed list.

Class "A" noxious weeds are required to be controlled. B and C are controlled on the local level, if at all.

Counties have their own noxious weed lists.

ETA: This is what I get for replying before reading the rest of the thread. Foxglove might have been listed as a noxious weed in years past, but not all noxious weeds are required to be removed, in fact most are not. The noxious weed label is also supposed to prohibit sale and distribution. Supposed to! That's why it's been so hard getting ivy on any list.
