Early this evening, a Vietnamese woman shows up at my front door crying her eyes out. I don't know her from Adam. Between the accent and the sobbing, she was very difficult to understand. It seems she lives in the nearby trailer park. Her landlord has told her to get rid of her chickens. She was hoping I would let them live here where she can visit them. The only other people willing to take them wanted to eat them. She has a friend coming to build a coop and run in my backyard on Sunday. I'm out of my mind, but what can I do? I'm just a softie. She and her daughter will come and clean all the coops every week. She has nine hens. I suggested she ask her landlord if he would let her keep her three banties. I hope he will.
So be very careful. Have it in writing that if they miss one week yes one week that the chickens are your and you can do what you want with them.. Ive rented to people and they can walk all over you and if you do anything wrong they can sue you not if they do anything wrong... Just please be very careful...

I had a family years ago that had a girl she wanted to pay for her goats she wanted one for sure and maybe one more. so it took her like 6 months to pay the goat off was supose to be more like a month.. When she came to get her goat she said no I paid for 2 goats she didnt! Her dad was a huge man and said give my daughter the other goat I said no ( the other goat was PG by that time and about due) I told them to take the one goat and get off my land or Id be happy to tell them the bill for feeding her the whole time. I was so upset about letting them have her! So please just be very careful, and yes I do know there are a lot of nice people out there that will do the right thing..

Well, every year, the people in the know, those"scientific" folks, come up with something different. One year eggs are bad for you, then carbs, then fat, but then fat is good, and then carbs are good; don't eat b-b-q, eat more fish . . . .and so on.

So, all I'm going to do is eat fruit and veggies, and home raised meat and eggs and avoid all the icky stuff I don't like, such as processed and fast food.

After all, half the time, half the scientists say one thing, and the other half disagrees; it's impossible to know who is right anymore. Same with nutritionists, which is why there are so many CONFLICTING books on diets and nutrition by EXPERTS.

Not to worry I know many/most people have no idea how to dispose of things like that. Even the little green propane tanks I use them too.
You do, Ok Im going to talk to my hubby and see how many we have and let you know. I think we have maybe 4 of the big ones and not sure of the small ones. But Have to ask hubby to see how many he wants to keep.. Than the rest are yours...

That is really kind of you to help out this woman, hallerlake. And since she and her daughters will clean all your coops for you, that will help you out too!

That would be awesome. I'd like to get eggs in the spring. It would be fun for the kids to watch them incubate. If you end up with 3 pullets, let me know though - there's definitely a benefit to knowing what you're getting ahead of time. We can't keep roosters.

The Silkie coop is coming along great (cat's out of the bag, might as well call it what it is... DH guessed what it's true intention was - it's pretty obvious it is a coop/run combo and not just a 2nd run). The goal is to have it done before we get 3 Silkies. Over the winter, I'll let the LF use it as extra run space. It is turning out very cute. I had to break down and buy two 2x4's. Thought I was going to have to buy a 1x1, but I ran over to my friend's house and she had a very long old 1x1 that had been pulled out of her attic during the remodel. Awesome! I may have to buy a few more boards before I'm done with it - but considering I'm building a rock solid coop for next to nothing, I can't complain.
Will do! This was my first time incubating and it really is a lot of fun to see the whole process. The kids will have fun candling and tracking development, etc.
Congrats on your new coop, it must be very satisfying to know it all or mostly came from reclaimed and free materials.

Have fun everyone who is going to Justbugged's for chicken processing, and learn lots! She and her DH are wonderful people. I will be at work, otherwise I'd be there to help.

Hi Everyone,
This week I built a run for my chickies. I mostly used wood from our spare stuff in the garage. I did end up buying four new boards and the 1/4" hardware wire to enclose it. I have a picture of what I want to build so it should be ok on the budget. The chicks are three weeks old and growing like little weeds, and so cute. They are going to be so pretty when they grow up :)

I am new at this, so I have a question...when can you begin to tell if a chick is a rooster or hen?? I have five chicks, and two are starting to show the crown on their beeks. Is this the sign of a rooster, or is it too soon to tell?? Thanks for any advice on this subject.

Lisa :)

Quote: I have a shy half acre.

Me too! 0.49acre LOL But it's quite an odd setup and some is unusable because it floods 1' deep in the winter with lots of rain; the seasonal creek turns our backyard to mush, and often a swamp.
Parts of mine flood ocassionally, but the soil is so sandy it drains very quickly. The coops and runs are on higher ground near the house. The friend took pictures of my set up (can be seen on link at bottom).
