So, we called 911, but they said harbor patrol wasn't working that day! They were going to send the coast guard to tow us in. But eventually, a nice bunch of folks showed up and towed us, so we called off the coast guard.

I'm glad we took our phones with us. That being said, they were new phones (2 days old) and I wasn't familiar with them. They are Androids, and unlike my 14 year old "flip" phone, they have all these gadgets, and it took me at least 10 minutes to figure out how to make a call, then the screen was so hard to read because of the brightness of the day, and finally, I couldn't figure out how to end the call, so finally just turned the darned thing off!

What a day!

(Totally sunburned!)
CUTE AIREDALE! Man, it seems you have had crazy bad luck with trying to enjoy your crabbing escapades! Hope you get a good trip soon!
Russ, here is an interesting thing a friend in the mid west does to suppliment her feed in winter:
She makes chicken "Silage"
She uses several new garbage cans, adds 2 contractor bags, and fills the cans with lawn clippings, crushed leaves and tosses in a few scoops of scratch in between each layer.
She folds the bags over in between additions and holds them down with 2-3 heavy cinder blocks.
Once full, she ties the inner bag off, then the outter & stacks them in a shady area.
In winter, she opens a bag & scatters the silage in each pen for the birds to enjoy in winter.
The grains will sprout, she says, and the birds just love it !
I have no bagger on my lawn tractor now, but next spring I intend to get one & do this silage thing.
Hmmmm, I'm very intrigued. Do you think mold may be an issue? We, too, need a bagger for our LM.
Ok, so I am beyond ****** right now! Just went out to check on my girls and found four pullets/ unkown cockreals dead. They were completely intact..... Only one of them had a tiny spot of blood under one of her wings. I need help trying to figure out what killed them. I do not know what time of day or night this happend as today I did not go out to give the girls treats this morning. The ones that got killed are 3 of my favorite up and coming Silkies that were 13 weeks old and the one and only baby that I kept out of my personal hatch ( also 13 weeks old) because she was so uniquely colored and the most friendly. Now these girls for some reason would not sleep in the coop, so they were sleeping out in the open last night.
When I found the bodies, two of them were really stiff and covered in fly eggs. The other two were still kinda limp but that could be because they were out in the sun. The only thing I have had killing my chickens, up untill now, was cyotes but they take the whole body and I only find feathers.
Please if you have any ideas at all what this could be let me know. Thanks guys

Soooooo terribly sorry for your loss! Hope you find the bugger and stop the massacre from reoccurring.

Tell me about it! I have 3! They are 2, 4(next week!), and 6. Eesh...they took my brain with them when they were born too, I can't remember anything anymore! Oh well, maybe I'll get it back when they move out! Perhaps it's a rental type thing

Well maybe we can still meet someday at one of our group's chicken meetups :)
HAHAHA, I CALL IT "MOM-BRAIN"!!!
Mine just turned 2. One kid is plenty - I don't know how you do it with three!!

I saw the posts about the meat bird processing. That sounded interesting, but Enumclaw is pretty far from me and my husband is not an enthusiastic babysitter. Is there a regular meeting, or something more informal? I would love to come, if I can fit it in my schedule. This kid has a bigger social life than I ever did!

Jennifer
I also have an only child. She is almost 12 now! She's been an AWESOME kid but was a difficult baby and didn't sleep more than 2-3 hrs for 6m. That's part of the reason she is an only child!! I am glad we've been able to support her "social life" as well as we have, although, we need to vastly improve OURS!!!
But I have had opossums on the property. I also caught a small raccoon
YIKES!!! They opossums are kinda creepy! Hope you deworm your pets as those critters bring in lots of yucky parasites!!!
Well, it was inevitable since Prince Will the peacock had a broken wing. The coyote got him this morning. :(

And now I can't find my last peachick.

Super sadness!!!!!!!!!!! Hope you find your baby and have better luck next time so you can enjoy those beauties!

No lip gloss...I have screws and hinges in my purse, lol. But here is the visual for you. :) and yes, I got some wide-eyed stares while we were rolling down meridian. We had some jazz music for their enjoyment too, haha

Here we are all loaded up neatly and ready to head back home. The Lowe's guys are highly amused with me, I have been there three times this week. Three guys asked if we needed help this time and they looked soarly disappointed when I said no thanks, lol.

This is my daughter in the mustang, She is my accomplice for this coop building expedition. :)

FRICKIN' HILARIOUS!!!!
We looooove our 'Stang!!!!

Well, this is a first for me. I finally let my Barnevelders out into Gen Pop after being in Quarantine for 3 weeks. I did it last night, just before dusk so the two cockerels could take a look at each other but not have to fight at bedtime (wasn't sure it would work). There were no ruffled feathers - himself put the 3 pullets and the cockerel on the roost and all was quiet.

This morning, I went out to check them. While they followed each other about, there seems to be NO aggression from either on to the other! Maybe it's because they are both young, I don't know. They are both very nice birds, and so far have been good around me and the other critters. So, keeping fingers crossed.

Duncan on the left, (tall, leggy Marans/Ameraucana/Cornish) and
Barnabus (Barnevelder) on the right

I'm hoping that Duncan, being a cross, will have an olive egger gene
for the Ameraucana girls.
WHAT BEAUTIES YOU HAVE!!!!!!!!

Just popping in to say hello after two weeks vacation back in RI/CT/MASS! Hello to all the new peeps!

Last minute before leaving, we decided to let two Serama broody's keep sitting on their eggs and we have had 11 chicks hatch over the last few days! Very exciting! If anyone would like some, let me know. We will be keeping 5 of them, so that leaves six available. I have two other folks on my list who have first dibs, but if they pass, they will be availalble.

We are gearing up for fair, only 2 weeks from tomorrow until coop in!!! Kids are working on projects and getting excited!

Hope everyone is well, I am not even going to try and read the last two weeks worth of posts, so if there is any big news, somebody PM me please!!! Gotta run to the airport to pick up my Dad who is visiting for a few days, but will try and at least keep up with reading after today!!!

Wow, I just spent the last 3 hours during William's nap working on creating our pocket chore chart for the kids. It seemed like 25 minutes. When he woke up and I heard him, I thought "Why is he awake already?!" LOL

Does anyone know what would cause a 3 week old chick to start flopping around on her back and suddenly die? I just lost my favorite Gold Laced Cochin chick. She was fine this morning, eating and drinking and came up to me for her morning treat of dried meal worms. About 20 minutes ago there was a big commotion in the brooder and I ran over to find her flopping around on her back and by the time I got the lid up and grabbed her she was gone. All of the other chicks were freaking out and trying to get as far away as possible. Any ideas about what may have happened?

What do you have for coop ventilation? I'm still in the building process and want to make sure I have enough ventilation. Would it be possible to have some of you share pictures of what you have done for coop ventilation. I read through the link in the learning section. But I guess I do better if I see what some others have done.

Also, I'm using hardware cloth for windows and runs. I have stapled it in place with my staple gun. Does it need to be more secure? I have seen screws and washers used. Any suggestions in that area would be helpful too.

Thanks

I'm almost out of wood again...I think another trip to haul some more lumber is coming soon, lol. The coop is looking awesome!

I'm sorry

I don't know what could have happened other than trauma? Do you think one of the other chicks pecked it's head? Or did it fall from a height? So sorry
