Do you have pictures to share? I'd love to see a Cream Legbar egg!

Who here on the wet side uses supplemental lighting in the fall/winter? I'm STILL on the fence about what I want to do and need to make a decision in the next couple weeks before we lose enough daylight that my POL birds skip laying until spring! ugh...decisions decisions.
I've read that first year pullets don't seem to be affected as much by the lack of light as older hens. I didn't supplement my girls (who were chicks in the spring) last year and they continued laying through the winter.

I dont know that they are drinking all of it as like I said I suspect I am losing some to evaporation. THough when I do refill the buckets the birds run over and drink for a solid 1-3minutes.
I don't think it's just evaporation. From your avatar I see you have the LG gallon waterer, which I also have in my grow out tractor. I had to refill it constantly because chickens were jumping on top of it and knocking/sloshing water overboard. Also, the least little slope it was set on and it seemed water ran off. I've had much better luck with going to a bucket with nipples, although the LG works fine for the two girls that are currently using it.

Jess, Since you have pullets that are just now beginning to lay, you should probably get eggs all winter from them without them letting up. When my spring chicks started laying in the fall they just kept going all year and I think that's true with most first year pullets.

As for supplemental lighting in the coop, I've considered it, but not done it yet. I am not completely dependent on my eggs either for eating since there are only two of us at home, nor do I need them for constant income so I try to give the girls a break. But I can afford to do that, so that's a purely personal choice.

Well today is the day that we have to put our English Mastive down. He is only 2 years old, but has major issues with his knees and has been getting worse over the last few weeks. So we are off to the vet later, our apt is at 4:50 we will head up there early to miss the trafic and walk him around for his last time. He got a huge steak lastnight with his dinner.

On top of that, I have lost almost about 10 chickens to at least three different preditors in the last two weeks.
Sorry to hear about the dog and the chickens...

Oh that's right - we need a nice Salmon Faverolles and Wheaten Ameraucana for the Favaucanas. Seriously, I'd love a couple of these. But I was just daydreaming about adding a couple of Cloverleaf Salmon Faverolles to the flock next year anyway. Jeanine has done such a fantastic job with her birds - beautiful, sweet, and productive!
