I have had some start laying as early as 17 weeks and have had others that were closer to 28-30 weeks. Keep in mind our chickens don't always read the same books we do. Therefore sometimes they don't do things the way we expect they should!

Brown eggs from an EE?? I hate to tell ya this but that is why they are called EE because they lay colored eggs. It's just that we never know what color we will get. I just had 8 chicks chase me home from Wilco. I am hoping the 4 pollo loco will give me some of my long sought after chocolate eggs and the 4 Ameracauna (come on people they are feed store/hatchery birds, EE's) will lay some nice pink and one purple egg. OK reality check I will be happy as long as they don't lay white eggs. Those are prohibited here. And I would prefer not brown, already have enough of those.

I sure hope Drama hasn't been reading the Light Brahma threads, recognizes that she's a hatchery bird, and decided to lay at 21 weeks instead of 8 months. But, I realize that there's a very high likelyhood that my hatchery EE could lay brown eggs, too. Oh well. Eggs are eggs. As soon as they are cracked and cooked, the shell ends up back in my dirt anyway. Brown shells sprinkled all over the ground outside is probably better than blue. I have some crushed white shells out there right now - and they are pretty visible from the road.

Quote: Prollly gonna get jumped on here by someone for saying this, but we have extremely high expectations of our young children. They rise to those expectations most of the time. It is simply unacceptable for a 4 year old to disobey ANY grownup. She has been taught who has authority over her and she knows to obey and do what she is told because God put adults over her as a GOOD authority, to teach her what is right and how to live so that she honors God in her young life and is a great person to be around. I completely disagree that they have a short memory. IF that's true, why can I say ONE time "Your birthday is next month" and she remembers it and talks about it every single hour of every single day, but telling her once or twice "Don't touch the cages" she can't remember? That's not true. She didn't WANT to listen, so she disobeyed. Sorry we have starkly differing opinions of kids, but it works for our family.

Just saw the very first beetle in my mealworm colony! I can't wait to see how the hens react when I feed them live mealworms! They'll probably do backflips!

I don't think we have that different of expectations - just a different style. When I was your age, my expectations of children were very much like yours. I had the luxury of having children late in life, so I got to watch many of my friends raising their children and learned that expectations can change over time due to realizations of how children actually learn.

Please teach your children there are times for a 4-year-old to disobey. You don't want a car to drive by and some adult telling your child "Come here, your mommy asked me to take you somewhere" and your child actually obeying that person just because he/she was a grown-up.

My children will question me who they are supposed to obey. I want it that way.

Your daughter had never met my husband. I would not have had expectations for her to obey him in a public location without first asking you. Had she been at our home, yes, we would have asked her to respect our rules - but not in a public location. Bob was a stranger to her.

I have a question on incubation temperatures. I have been running my Little Giant incubator since Friday night to get the temp stabilized. How much can it deviate from 99.5 degrees and not harm the eggs? Yesterday I saw it at 100.3 in the morning and at 98.5 in the evening. It's in our walk-in closet, which is the most stable room in the house (I store most of the wine in there, lol). Is a fluctuation of a degree or two alright?

I think my husband left the master bath window open for most of yesterday, so I'm sure that affected it. That window rarely ever gets opened, and I'll make sure it doesn't at all for the next month. I guess it at least means he's listening to me when I tell him not to leave the bathroom vent fans running for hours... but it meant that I had to throw an extra fleece on the bed. It was cold!!

I've got to wash the egg turner trays today and add water to tweak the humidity. I'm hoping to have all my eggs by tomorrow, but it might take an extra day.

Thanks!

Jennifer

My poor little guy looked so out-of-it when I dropped him off at school. His eye is pretty swollen from the bounce house accident. I wouldn't be surprised if I got a call from the school today to come pick him up. I hope he holds it together today, though.

I've got to go through my daughter's closet. I had the kids pack their own clothes for the weekend. I double-checked them with each child before we put the bags in the vehicle. I know my daughter has worn the pair of pants she packed within the last couple of weeks. I couldn't believe it - she couldn't even get them on while we were in Oregon - and she didn't have a back-up. I think both the twins have gone through a massive growth spurt - they suddenly look very big to me. My daughter has been crying so much the last few days that her legs hurt really bad. Are "growing pains" for real? I don't know what else to attribute her leg pain to. While driving home last night, she was screaming and crying at the top of her lungs that her legs hurt "so bad".

Poor guys. Yes, "growing pains" are very real...I STILL remember mine...and mine were always in the legs. Excruciating, and nothing to be done about it...

I'm curious to know, too. I have read that the incubator should be in a draft-free environment where the temperature doesn't change. But that's book knowledge. I have no experience. When I finally get to incubate eggs, I find myself wondering where I will keep the incubator. The garage is probably too cold, because we don't heat it. Every other room in the house we're walking by, going in and out doors, etc.

"Growing pains" certainly are real. all 5 of our children experienced them to different degrees as they were growing up. The boys seemed worse but the girls definitely had the leg pains, too. I remember constant leg pains when I was young...funny I can remember that far back but have trouble remembering what I had for breakfast LOL.
