Actually, you can. I learned last week from a discussion at Cub Scouts re: a homeless child that CPS will not take a child away, even if he or she is homeless. Living in a tent would be considered trying to provide for that child. I thought it was strange. And sad. And even more sad for the child near us that doesn't have a home.

Fair enough. Doesn't really change the gist, which is that there are not "always options" for poor people to escape from bad neighborhoods and failing schools and crime. That sort of attitude is quite common. It is called poverty denial, and it is the underlying reason why we, the wealthiest nation on Earth, have about half of Americans struggling with poverty at this time, and there are 24 countries on this planet with a lower child-poverty rate than we have. It's sickening.

So I'd ordered some 20x30 pond netting to put over the chicken run and keep my stupid birds from flying out. I think I love that stuff. It's very strong and tough compared to the bird or deer netting they sell at the home improvement stores. It actually stretched over the whole run which is essentially 16x32.5. Made me very happy. I thought I was going to have to put a small chunk of different netting at the very end.

We're going to make a pvc arch over the run so that we can tarp the one end so water and snow will slide off. We're thinking of putting field fencing over the top as well that will be under the tarp. The netting will be staying too, to keep out the small birds. I'll eventually get netting down all the sides to keep them out as well.

We're planning out how we are going to build the new enclosed coop in their shelter area. That will end up being 8x16. I'm plotting how I want to paint it and I'm already finding a few decorations I'd like for it. (Amazon is a bad, bad place for me)

I think this would be great to have on it. I can teach them to come to the sound of the bell.




I've also found some cool chicken and rooster wall hooks that would be great for hanging some of the scoops and such off of. My DH just keeps giving me that look when I say "oh look what I found. Wouldn't this be cute for the coop?"

My chickens come running when I whistle. Ring the bell, give treats -- every day. Pavlov was a smart dude.

A house is no more secure than a tent if you are talking about someone breaking in. If you can not afford a securety system (and tha does not always help) people can break a window just as easily as walking into a tent. As far as the kitchen goes there ae families that have kitchens in their homes like you and I do and they never get used because they eat fast food or go out to eat for every meal, and no that is not made up I personaly know of 4 families tht have children and do this. Which to me is a form of neglect and abuse becasue of how over weight these children are from the horrible eating habbits their parents are teaching them.
But never mind all that, we got off the subjct of jail/prison that we were on before and it is hard to descuss the topic of children with people whom do not have any. I am not in any way saying you don't know anything about them, and I am know where near a perftect parent but there is just a difference when you do have children to those who do not.

Sadly I will not be there eather. My dad of the year went back on his word for one of my lil sisters so now I have to take her school shopping and yes she has been in school for two weeks now.

If I yell "chick chick chick" I'll be ran over. Sometimes they can't stop fast enough and run into me. All those little heads staring at me and looking for their treat. My broody already has her 11 day old chicks trained to do it. Sometimes they will beat her to me. They all have been getting a lot of watermelon lately. These are the first chicks I've had that ate watermelon so young. Their mama loves it more than any other chicken out there and has let them know how good it is. I figure if I take bread out, I can have them trained to a bell within two times of giving it, max. They are quite willing to learn tricks for bread. They love it and don't get it very often.

I woke up to a phone call from my neighbor because my chickens were in her back yard. There's a 6 foot tall chain link fence between us and no one's ever escaped our coop before, so I was pretty confused about how that would be possible, thinking maybe they were mistaken and one of the other neighbors' chickens were over there. Sure enough, though, 3 of our 4 girls were in their yard and one of the doors on the coop was hanging open (they're secured by window latches it takes a good human grip to open). All I can think is that we used to have an issue with neighborhood teenagers skipping through our backyard and maybe they did it, but I don't see why they'd open the coop or toss chickens over a 6 foot fence. I've been searching for Maki all day and still haven't found her...I haven't found feathers anywhere either so I'm trying to be hopeful, but I'm feeling crushed.

I can tell already that I'm going to be a pile of nerves until the eggs hatch. I've started a log of temps and humidities. I check the incubator almost 10 times a day. I'm glad I got the turner, otherwise I'd be sticking my hands in there all the time! As it is, I keep topping off the water in the bottom, but at least that only involves opening a couple of little vent plugs. Today the temp is 97.5 and humidity is at 55% after my latest addition.

I'm looking forward to meeting more chicken people tonight! I'll have to drive down to Seattle to pick my husband up, so hopefully we will make it there by 6:30. But who knows how traffic will be.
