Hi all IM 900 post behind but wanted to say hello and I'm lurking. I took a fall about 30 feet down out of our Barn loft. So have been laying low. I was in bed for few days straight and since I hurt my neck and shoulder Im suppose to be resting. But gonna try and do some canning this weekend We wii see how it goes Anyways just wanted to say hello:)

Makes ya wonder, huh? I've met people who teach their dogs to be mean on purpose. Scary people.
Those people have been detrimental to dogs in general! Dogs do not need to be taught to be mean. They need to be socialized so they are not fearful and can determine the right situations to protect. Scary people is right!!! I fear people more than most animals!!

I'm on Whidbey Island, in Coupeville. LOTS of chicken people here - we have an annual Coop Tour!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I woke up to a phone call from my neighbor because my chickens were in her back yard. There's a 6 foot tall chain link fence between us and no one's ever escaped our coop before, so I was pretty confused about how that would be possible, thinking maybe they were mistaken and one of the other neighbors' chickens were over there. Sure enough, though, 3 of our 4 girls were in their yard and one of the doors on the coop was hanging open (they're secured by window latches it takes a good human grip to open). All I can think is that we used to have an issue with neighborhood teenagers skipping through our backyard and maybe they did it, but I don't see why they'd open the coop or toss chickens over a 6 foot fence. I've been searching for Maki all day and still haven't found her...I haven't found feathers anywhere either so I'm trying to be hopeful, but I'm feeling crushed.
How scaaaaaary!! That would certainly make me uneasy not knowing how it was opened! Hope you find Maki!!!

I don't actually wash them. I do rinse them very thoroughly and lightly salt the cavity. Then I rub them down with a mix of salt, pepper, paprika and sage.
Then into the over at 350 degrees. Yummmmm! Oh my bad I should have read the whole post.

So a few nights ago I went to bed at a "decent" hour (11ish) since I was going to the Taylor Bridge Fire Run (walk!) the next day. As I was falling asleep I picked up an all-too-familiar smell. No, it wasn't the hubby

. So I had to do the Peroxide/Baking Soda/Dawn thing at midnight. I decided I should look around the yard for a carcass since a previous dog of mine actually killed one. No carcass was found but then I freaked out about the chickens! So there I was at midnight in my nightgown and bare feet carrying a huge stick walking around my field!!! I am not sure what I was going to do if I found one. I guess I would've pulled a Bear Grylls and flung it at the thing!!! I'm sure I was quite the sight!!!!

Blueing you mean they still sell it? Really takes me back - my mom used the old wringer type washer and used to put blueing in for the whites. Many years later when I raised show dogs, we'd put blueing in for the black ones. My boss went overboard putting it in- the dog turned out bluer than a Kerry Blue, he was supposed to be jet black.. Ah the good(?) old days.

Quote: DH and I will be putting on a butchering school aka "Freezer Camp 101" sometime in the spring of 2013. We have been raising our own meat birds for the past 4 years. We had to learned from a variety of sources, but we both feel that it's good to share knowledge. I will be ordering meat bird chicks about late March or early April. The classes will then be held about 8 to 9 weeks later. I have found that we will be offering a class on both a Saturday and a Sunday. I will be posting more about this in the Spring.

Your story reminded me of our little Silkie dog that got himself sprayed in the face by a skunk. It took a while before we could tolerate him again.

I just want to say a big thank you for all the nice comments about my homemade bunny cage, and the drying mats.

I bought the drying mats at the Bonney Lake Fred Meyer's Store. I would think that all the Fred Meyer's Stores should carry them.
