Well when ya buy what we call a package it is 3# of bees. That's about 30,000. A good strong hive may be from 50,000-100,000 And yes I give them all a name.

Thanks, I had no idea how many bees typically lived in a hive. I find this very interesting, and sad that they are being attacked by those flies along with other issues.

I'm glad you're enjoying them. That buff was surpisingly petite, but didn't seem to have any issues and held her own with the other ten chicks, and she and the porcelain have always been best friends. I think a lot of the sucess came from the infallible Brinsea bator a BYC friend loaned me.

Hi folks.... I have been doing some research for my next additions to my chicken family... See the dark brown eggs below and the olive green ones.. I would like some girls that lay those colors I was told to look for Olive Eggers.... So I did a search and found that can mean several things That French Black Marans lay the dark brown eggs?? I think I have it right... I researched those 2 types of birds and I was wondering if any one has any or knows someone that might have or want to sell some????

Make sure you see egg pics before you buy birds. Not all Marans lay eggs that dark (those are extremely dark, and will be hard to come by, definitely won't find that dark of an egg from a hatchery bird) and all olive eggers lay different colored eggs. Egg color in neither the Marans or the OE can be guaranteed unless they are already laying.

Check with Chickielady. She has birds that have the potential to lay Olive. But keep in mind that until you see eggs from that bird you never know what she will lay.

My Marans laid gorgeous dark brown eggs (sometimes with speckles, so pretty!) and my Wheaten Ameracauna lays the bluest eggs I've ever seen. Both of those birds came from fellow BYCer Illia. Perhaps she has more Marans.

Well I wouldn't have believed it until I experienced it first hand, but it's the Silkies... They are like the lap dogs of the chicken world. All of my girls will sit contentedly in my lap cooing and purring as I pet their soft feathers. I am in love with them. I don't know why else I'd be keeping them - the eggs are small and I don't need a lot of "silkie bators," but I can't imagine giving them up now!

(Although, having a few more silkie bators this spring will lend itself well to new chicks! Uh oh... I forsee trouble in my future!)

So often I've thought about just having Silkies. And a Frizzle or two. They are adorable. I have one Silkie and she is such a dependable layer. Small eggs but perfect. FAbulous personality. If I do, I'll ask Robin to hatch me some babies! I am NOT going to start hatching. Really, I am NOT going down that road.....
