Why do some people have chickens? ugh! I just replied on a forum where someone was feeding their chickens scratch for feed and were worried about why they weren't laying yet at only 21 weeks. I told him/her first to feed the chickens real chicken food, not treats, and that it's normal for chickens not to be laying quite yet at 21 weeks. She asked about their crowns getting red and I had to tell her it's a comb/wattles. Do people really just jump right into hobbies without reading anything at all? I feel so sorry for her animals!

I don't mean to offend here, but ouch! Newbies don't deserve to be criticized for asking how to raise their chickens. Every single one of us had to start learning somewhere, and many of us realize that we will be learning for years to come.

Not to mention - there are children, who raise chickens for 4-H, on chicken forums. I know for a fact there are very young teens who participate on BYC. To a child, this statement would be very hurtful.

I have the brinsea octo 20, we of course have a drier climate here, and I have experimented using sponges and filling both troughs, the best out come was when I just kept both troughs full of water, do you have a air vent on it? ( sorry haven't gone to the website yet) I have a adjustable air vent on mine, and I just put the wire to the hygrometer/thermometer through there. I also get a long straw and a syringe and add water to the trough through it if I need to, during lock down. And yes every incubator is different and there are about a gazillion factors involved in incubating so, I try to keep a journal and record temps, humidity and hatching information, when they started to pip and actually hatch ect. It helps me determine if where my incubator is at is working or not. That has been my experience, good luck! Hang in there!

So how does one deal with squirrels stealing eggs? I fear these Exchequers may never lay a large enough egg to discourage a squirrel from stealing it,. I'm in the city and don't even own a gun and don't want to. With the rampant squirrel population in this city, killing or trapping them would only bring new ones in, anyway.

Rats I can live with because they only steal eggs at night, but this is a problem!
