Day 4 is what I cracked into my frying pan back in July from store bought eggs. That was one nasty surprise!

It's also the reason I have my own chickens now.

Glad I've never ran into that!

I always crack my eggs into a bowl first. On the rare occasion that an egg looks funny, it goes down the drain.

Just wanted to say hello :) We have had a stretch of rotten lately. First I got hurt. Then my SIL passed after a long battle with cancer. That was 2 weeks ago. Now My Grandfather has had a massive stroke and its unlikely he will recover. Add to that all the fall time colds and such ... has made for a bum go. So Ive just been lurking and trying to Keep up with ya all :) Thats a full time job in its self..LOL

My chickies are doing well.. My girls are going through their first molt.. what a site some of them are. The Cornish X are about 2 weeks out from processing. They have been a great "learning experience" I'm def over my ideal budget with this batch.. But I know I can do better next time... have a much better idea now how and what they will eat. Also think I will def do a tractor set up next time.

I hope you all are doing well. I think of this little group when Im out with the chicken crew each day.. I send my best wishes as always and hope things calm down enough that I can visit and maybe share pics of my newest additions :)

I'm so sorry about your friend. Harborview is a great place - the doctors will take wonderful care of her.

Sorry about your hatch, too. That has to be frustrating.

I have only hatched by incubator once, and with Hallerlake's eggs that I picked up (no shipping & totally fertile & adorable chicks!) and the Brinsea Mini Advanced - we were very lucky and had seven out of seven hatch.

I would recommend it. http://www.brinsea.com/products/mini.html (I also want the ovascope - that'd be so awesome!)

Per the instructions that came with the Brinsea - we weighed the eggs every other day to make sure they were losing weight at the correct rate. We also did a PowerPoint charting the weight loss since this hatch was for school.

I'm glad we did this - because our humidity was very high - for two reasons I think. It was a very rainy spring, and we put the incubator in the same room that we keep my son's tropical frogs (room warm & cage misty.)

For these reasons, we ended up leaving it dry towards the middle - and only filled one of two reservoirs at hatch.

I also wasn't as concerned about opening and closing the lid as the heat & humidity came right back up each time.

I should mention; we had hatched with broody hens three times before and I know how often the eggs sit there getting chilled - they can handle it! (eta - not during lockdown - the last 3 days!)

Here is a video we took of the first chick's hatch - you can see a couple others on my you tube channel.

Too bad I had to sell the incubator and am not allowed to hatch in the house anymore. It was fun, and the two Brabanters I still have from this hatch are my friendliest chickens!

We also have colds here - everyone at school, work, karate, etc. It's that time of year!

I'd love to see pics of your chicks! You can also post pictures of your molting chickens in the 2012 molting contest thread =)

wrist rocket? In case you don't know what those are, they are a very powerful sling shot.

It'd be nice if our neighbors would just understand they SHOULDN"T FEED THE SQUIRRELS!!! UGH. I am constantly finding peanut shells in our bird bath from them.

Some of them are demanding and downright scary! When we first moved in to our house, one of them came into our back door and was demanding food!

Jumped on and scared my son who was pretty young at the time.

Little rats with big tails looking for handouts.
