You KNOW IT GIRL I lived there for a short time near the hospital and then we moved to The Dalles in 1965.

That's long before my time there! We moved there in '93 (we had the big old Victorian on 2nd St.), I graduated and moved away in 2001, moved back for a few more years, left again, but I still have family there that I visit a couple times a year. I'll always be an east sider at heart

I've been thinking about making my coop more secure by adding a layer of hardware cloth or welded wire fencing behind the chicken wire, but haven't been willing to drop the bucks when all I needed was a chunk about 4'x14' and everything comes in 50' rolls...but today finally I found someone on craigslist selling some leftovers from their project super cheap

. I have a little left over as well if anyone feels like picking it up in Tacoma. It's new welded wire fencing (the stuff with 2"x4" holes), and there's a small chunk (14" x 36") and a big chunk (4' x 7ish')...just send me a pm

. Retrofitting a coop is a pain in the butt! But the part we didn't build came with chicken wire, and we built the run to match because I'm cheap...I knew craigslist would have what I needed eventually

. Now I feel better about winter coming on, I'm already seeing a lot more possums than usual.

So, I got rid of my Dish network over a year ago, one cause they were changing the program everytime I turned around and it was getting too expensive, so we had a digital box that we had never used, and so I hooked it up.

so I get about 6 channels, pbs of course and create tv are my favorite and the local channels and I've gotten pretty used to not seeing my other favorite shows on dish, BUT.... at the end of Sept our local station added ME tv memorable TV and it plays ALL the old shows from when we were kids!!

OK like Hawaii five O, Perry Mason, Make room for daddy, Mash, Emergency, lost in space, um...all the good westerns
like Gun Smoke, The big Valley, The rifleman, I could go on and on!! LOL My husband and I LOVE IT !!

Now I now a lot of you "kids" out there have no idea what I'm talking about but, today I was watching batman and I was probably only 6 or 7 when it was on but, when I heard the joker say he was gonna use his "surfing experience and ability tranformometer... I thought I was gonna die laughing!!

Anyway, it's fun to trip back to the "old school"!!!

My sister was diagnosed with West Nile three years ago.

Wow. That brings that one close to home, doesn't it? We hear about things like West Nile, but we can easily blow it off. This year DH has been over-the-top picky about getting in the house when mosquitoes come out - to the point of driving me crazy. He gets very upset when I ignore him and still work outside with the mosquitoes.

I'm sorry your sister had to go through that. I hope she is doing much better and doesn't have lasting effects of the virus. Good for you for catching it, too. You probably did save her life.

Ya know I guess we are really lucky, we aren't bothered by them, but, I know what your talking about, have you ever seen Billy the exterminator??? OMG!! He has some really jerky racoons!!

I've seen that show a few times. Gosh - what some of those guys do for a day job is just downright freaky. There's no way I'd do what they do. I'm too big of a chicken. Guess I fit in with my chickens, huh?

I absolutely love the old Batman show. The movie was genius; I like it way more than any of the other ones. This "kid" appreciates lots of good older media.

Did you go? We got there right when the doors opened and got some great stuff! I was happy that dh and the kids went afterall..I needed help carrying stuff.
I think they should do it somewhere besides downtown next time. Parking was a pain, it was on the 5th floor of an office building, with narrow hallways. Very hot and crowded. When we left there was a line around the block to get in, I'm glad we got there early!

Nope, had way too much to do today after our raccoon attack last night! I was very sad to miss it, though!

I know you already put the ointment in the eye but you really don't want to use dexamethasone on an eye that you don't know the complete symptoms on. Dex is bad if she has a ulcerated cornea, the Neomycin and polymysin B part isn't bad, but yea, dex is a steriod, not to be use in a condition that is unknown. And you would have to get a vet to confirm that she doesn't have that issue. Terramycin is safer. If it's improved, I wouldn't put any more in, just in case, if it gets worse, I would get some of the terramycin. The fact that she is eating and drinking even a little is good.

Good to know, thank you. It seems as though the coon did all the damage just above her eye, but then again, it is oozing, so perhaps it could be the cornea. Now that we have her on antibiotics, given your advise I'll hold off on the ointment unless it gets worse. The eye is still oozing a bit but not as bad as before. Should I wipe out the ooze or leave it be?

So, she is eating egg like a champ now and drinking Pedialyte too. But only if we feed it to her. On her own she mostly just stands there. But I'm very hopeful. Her condition is improving for sure, and hopefully the antibiotics will turn out to be the right way to go. We just gave her some apple and it must be the sugar: she really perked up! We are keeping her inside for the night. She's still being a lap chicken right now but here soon I'm going to put her in the cat carrier in an elevated spot in a dark room for the night.

Sorry I was unable to provide more updates throughout the day. In addition to caring for the injured hen, my BF was working hard all day to make the crappy coop a little less crappy to tide us over until we finish the chicken palace. One big problem is that it took him a lot longer than he thought it would, and the flock's roosting instinct kicked in. So it was my job to keep them out of the pine tree (where they've been roosting for the past nine months) until he finished! OMG, that was not an easy task at all!!! Very stressful. I had a scoop of dried mealworms I picked up this afternoon at the feed store, thinking that if the injured one wouldn't eat those, she wouldn't eat anything. Turns out she passed up the mealworms and opted for scrambled egg instead. Anyway, the mealworms came in handy to distract the flock from going up into the tree - for a while. Eventually it became very stressful for all of us, requiring help from two of my BF's roommates to keep them at bay while he worked! Really, it was pretty traumatic. I knew that as soon as one of them went up into the tree, she could well be dead by morning as I'm sure that raccoon was at the ready for a second chance to get at them tonight. But, we got it done, and the four hens are all safe in their too-small, not-ventilated coop. Oh, well, tomorrow he's going to build more onto it, including ventilation. For tonight they will just have to make do. I really hope my little Leghorns aren't pecked to death by morning! Our flock is definitely not used to confinement.

And this was all after my BF spent the entire night last night sitting under the pine tree with his dog, a flashlight, and a book, guarding against that raccoon that had just been chased off by our neighbor. So, literally zero sleep before he had to get working on the coop to make it remotely suitable. Now he's at band practice till 10pm. Poor thing. Best chicken papa ever!!!

Alright, back to my sickly little hen. Thanks again, guys!!! I'll be sure to keep y'all posted.
