What kind of thermometer do you guys use in your brooders? Right now I'm using a meat thermometer (oh, the irony... and their future in-garage dust bath will be a roasting pan... LOL... yes, there are times that I find humor in the most inappropriate things). The meat thermometer works fine, except one of the chicks have taken to it as a pillow. When chicks sleep on the meat thermometer, you don't get accurate readings.

Well first I don't use one in the brooder. I just make sure there is room for them to get away from the heat if they want. Also keep in mind that most meat thermo are "contact" Which may not give accurate readings of air temp.

So... that one egg that never pipped or zipped and we believe quit early on... part of me wants to dissect it this evening with the kids so we can see what an embryo looks like, the other part of me is thinking "what if". It is an olive egg, and it was extremely difficult to candle. When we candled it just before lockdown, the only thing we could see for sure was that it had 2 tiny air pockets on each end instead of 1 big one. When DH removed the chick from the incubator, he did so in a steamy bathroom, so it shouldn't have affected that egg too much if it were viable. He removed the chick from that incubator the same way he saved the chick that had pipped and partially zipped, but stuck beneath extra egg shells in the other incubator, and that one survived.

Any suggestions? Do I keep it incubating? Today is day 22.

The one standing tall, 2nd in from the left, is the 5-toed crow. The one on the right has 5 toes, too. The two with the white spots on their heads have 4-toes.

Oh my gosh. These poor chicks. They keep falling asleep standing up, then they roll completely over backward, wake up and look around startled. It's just too funny.

I'm getting a kick out of mine, too. The youngest chicks are 12 days old now. Last night I was watching them wander around the brooder. A spotted Sussex chick kept walking under the ceramic heat emitter, laying down and stretching a wing out to enjoy the heat. Then she'd enjoy it a little too much, tip over, and roll onto her back. She'd pop back to her feet, trot off in a huff, then eventually wander back to lie down and roll over again. The brain cells weren't quite firing.

Sorry... I worry about me sometimes

no need to be sorry or to worry about yourself. It happens all the time to me. Heck I come on the forum and happily start typing away and wonder why the stuff on the screen looks like gibberish, then I realize I had my fingers in the wrong position. Then I erase the mess and by that time I totally forgot what the heck was so important anyway. Life goes on and it's true I am easily amused and entertained but I keep going. What? where? I dunno, just got here.
