@ this and Oprah in a crock pot.

To the OP, I'm sorry about your roo situation. It is sad when it's something that you've raised yourself. I have 7 packing peanut roosters that came with a hatchery order I made, and they may have to end up as eating birds as well. Right now they're all just cute little chicks, and I'm not sure how I'll handle it if it comes to that. I'm hoping to be able to rehome at least some of them.

the roo came upon the name Ophra because even tho i insisted he must be a roo...i was informed that he ws a hen cuz once again the DH said he checked and it was defenatly not a roo...even after the crowing......but it did seem like a wierd off crow and when the taking care of buisness started it didnt seem like he was actually taking care of buisness. So i began to think it was a gender confused bird. She was big black and looked like she had blonde highlights...of course the DH named her/him.....i ate some but he ate the most and he is all gone. Wasnt much meat.

I've learned over the years to not name my food. It's just easier that way. Our flock management includes butchering and canning our old hens (pressure canning makes them good and tender!) so, knowing that, I do my best not to get attached. Sometimes I'll name a rooster, but his name is always Stew.

How right you are, but they won't ever do it or learn from it. I like when they name their meaties cute little girly names then freak out when they have to do something they knew they had to do when the times comes 7wks, then decided it was better if the DH does it instead while they hide in the house crying, and writing post about it on here for support from others who were also weak on the deal to make them feel better about it LOL.

I really wasn't trying to slam anyone. Just stating what makes it somewhat easier. I don't like butchering them when the time comes - ugly white meat birds are one thing, but my layers is different. When the time comes, we use the "two nails in a log and a hatchet" method. My job is to hold their feet. I can do it, but I usually don't look....

Once that part's done, I'm fine. I just keep thinking of the cute little chicks that will be replacing the hens.

I was raised a farm girl and I do name my food. Last night we had a nice pork dinner with Walter.

I always was just thankful to Walter and Kevin and Daniel all of the other cows and pigs (and soon chickens) for their sacrifice of my meal. I don't waste anything, because to me that would be wasting their life. To me, it is honoring their purpose on earth. Weird, I know.

We raised registered Tunis Sheep for several years. I would dock the tails of the ewe lambs but not most of the ram lambs. My rule was "don't name the ones with the long tails". No one ever followed the rule so there was much saddness when the long taild lambs went to market.

Makes sence to me! Getting as much value out of the animal as possible gives value to the critters life.
