Wasp nest...

And not to be disrepectful here, I do appreciate any input... but I wasn't looking for identification. I am pretty sure that they are aerial yellow jackets. I just thought the nest was kind of neat and was debating if I should leave it alone or kill them. I prefer to leave them whenever possible. I am finding everyone's input interesting, thank you!

I think it's a great location to just view them and enjoy.

Yep, those look to be d. arenaria, a member of the yellowjackets; not a member of the Paper Wasp genera. That is a fantastic nest... I would suggest saving it if you can. Very neat photos!

So if I leave it there and observe, is anybody interested in update pictures if it gets bigger?

Next question... Is it true or just an old wives tale that when the nests are higher you'll get more snow? I think it was year before last that they were under the second story eaves and way up in the old elm tree... we got quite a bit of snow. Last year I don't think I saw any, and we got dumped on, record breaking. Perhaps the nests were too high up to see them?

Since this one is only about 5 or 6 feet off of the ground, will we get a break from all of the snow?

I think most of us would LOVE updated photos. Well, I would at least! And yes, old wives' tale... although I doubt there are any scientific studies on the issue

Speaking from a strictly non-scientific point of view, since you already made it clear you weren't looking for such input, I would enjoy seeing pictures of it as it grows!

I vote for more pictures! You might want to invite your local entomologists, too!
