Wasted food!

We have chicks 1 week old today who always food and water available to them. A ton of food is on the floor of the brooder...any ideas how to contain or to be able to save some of the food the chicks are wasting?

Can you raise the feeder a bit so the chicks can’t scratch in it? If not, waste happens. You might want to try fermenting your feed....less waste. There is a ton of info on how to ferment.

I found instructions somewhere to cut down a red solo cup to help the crumble exit "lower" in the mason jar type feeders - that has completely stopped mine from getting everywhere and making a mess (and I've since modeled and 3D printed a couple of "adapters" that are eaiser to deal with than the solo cup was). Now all that is wasted is the powder left at the bottom when it's time to refill.

I have a small container (the kind that prepackaged lunch meat comes in) that I fill with food and have cut a section of the lid out...they can jump on top and eat but when they scratch, they only get the side with the lid...no mess! It has worked perfectly!
