My chickens never took to the horizontal nipples. We got a heated one for winter and still had to haul water out there every day. If it was in this weather every couple of hours. Left it through the next summer then got tired of cleaning a full waterer.

What happened if you refused to bring out water?

If they're always given another option, they simply won't bother with the nipples, even if they've learned to use them.

I had buckets under the house for rain water. They would come a long ways to the house and gulp it up. When It was dry or cold they just didn't drink out of nipple waterer so I had to bring out some open containers at the end of the day.
