Watch out with purina!!!!!

If you have't had a fecal done, you do not know it is cocci.. Many deseases have the same symptoms and if you are not medicating for the correct one, you will loose the rest of the birds for sure. Take some of the dead ones in and get them posted, to try and save the rest.

Jerry, I am so sorry for your losses. I know how devastating it can be. Please get a confirmation from a vet on what you are dealing with. It is the only sure way to know you are treating them correctly and working towards resolution/healing. Any vet can do a fecal (dog vet). Take a sample in and ask them to test it for parasites (worms) and coccidiosis. It is generally under $20 and well worth it.

I'm not sure if you should continue to feed medicated feed while treating for cocci. You may want to ask about that too.

I hope your others recover quickly.

Jody

I'ts recommended to use a different coccidiostat for outbreaks than what is routinely fed in the feed. This is to avoid drug overdose..

You have been advised that the sulfa drugs won't do any good for cocci, please stop it's use and switch to the proper drugs. Using antibiotics when not necessary causes resistance to them and can make treatment of later illnesses very difficult.

As for the feed having it in, that is not enough to treat the cocci outbreak. You need to get the Amprolium or sulmet into them or you will loose more birds.

Sulmet is the sulpha drug, that is the trade name for Sodium Sulfamethazine.

Amprolium is not the only in feed cocci medication anymore, several others are now in use. As I'm in Canada I'm unsure what your Start and Grow would have, but look on the label for amprolium, diclazuril, robenidine, those are common. If you want to use a medication I would suggest selecting one other than the same one in the feed as this particular cocci could well be resistant to it. See your other thread for suggestions.
