I just wanted to get some thoughts on what breed rooster would be a good protector and watchful eye on my free range flock

It is not so much a breed, but more of a maturity level. A rooster needs to be close to a year old. If you know someone nearby that has chickens, often times they have an extra rooster that has just been too nice to cull.

Another advantage of getting an older rooster, is usually by a year, their dispositions are set.

Good luck,

Mrs K

One thing to remember...........The rooster may or may not fight an attacker. The rooster you choose should not be viewed as a "guard dog". Fight or flight instinct will make the rooster run just as it does the hens. A good flock protector may also feel he needs to protect them from YOU.

That being said...... I have had good and bad roosters and believe it or not the best rooster was the bantam cochin. He would sound the alarm very early and the hens would dive for the coop followed by his fluffy behind.

Absolutely!^^^

It's not based on breed but an individual birds behavior, the keepers behavior can also have a large impact on how the bird behaves.
