Water bath canner info.

This is all news to me. I have a 46" Thermadore glass top and have water bathed canned on it for 2 years now. The only things I had to do was get a smooth bottom pot since the stove would not recognized the black enamel type due to the edges in the bottom. Other than that I have not had any problems. Never thought to check the manual about this. Also, mine will keep a nice even boil going at all times.

I love my stove and don't throw tomatoes at me but I hate gas stoves

And of course, the one I bought today is NOT one with a smooth bottom.

Guess it will be going back to the store I bought it from. <<Sniff... Sniff>> I will have to look around town tomorrow to find one with a smooth bottom.

Thanks for that.

What brand is your stove?

Mine doesn't require special pots and pans, but senses when there is not full flat contact so it can make an annoying beeping noise - saying something like "hey stupid you left the burner on". If you can try yours on the stove without having take labels off etc so you can return if it doesn't work than I would try.

The pot I got was from Macy's and it holds 13 1/2 pint jars and I think 5 quart jars. Was a $100.00 pot marked down to $36.00. I believe it is a 16 quart stock pot.

Good luck

My mother in law claims she used to use a hot plate for her canner. Have you considered one of these?

Since I don't remember if hot plate is local slang, I'm talking about one of these:

Go to Home Depot or Lowes, and buy a propane turkey fryer. Then, you can just do it outside, on the patio, and come Thanksgiving, you can fry a turkey.

I have a Fridgedaire glass top stove that I've been canning on since I bought it three years ago. I have a canning pot with any uneven bottom, so yes, it take FOREVER to come to a boil, but once it's boiling it's fine. I've never had a problem. I just fill the canning pot with water and turn the stove to high. Pretty much by the time I have everything else ready, the water is boiling.

I'll go ahead and try it. If I can't get it to boil, I might just go to my sisters to finish canning. Not my first choice, but that was offered to me. <<Sigh>> I would have never thought I would have these issues when I picked my stove out 2 years ago.

Honestly, with 5 kids running through my house I'd be scared to death to put a pot of boiling hot water on something like that. I could see it getting bumped off way to easy. Thanks for offering the idea though.

I have a flattop cook stove and I absolutely love it. I do water bath can on it too, have been for three years now. When I fill it with water, I fill it with hot water so it will not yake as long to get boiling. Don't fret .... fire that baby up and get to canning. Don't forget we want some pics of all your goodies.
