Water bath canner info.

Thanks for starting this thread. We just moved and I now have a glass top electric stove. I didn't know I couldn't use my canner on it. Guess I will try the burner on our gas grill and see how that works. Anyone try this?

I do a lot of canning and when I was shopping for a new stove last winter the salesperson said that Whirlpool is the only company that will stand behind it's guarentee if you can on their glass top. I didn't get one tho....went with the old style electric stove.

I think that you can use a water bath canner on some. I use one on my jennair. However, most shouldn't have a pressure canner on them because the extreme heat can crack the stovetop. Check with the manufacturer. Some "glasstops" are actually ceramic and it can vary whether or not it's safe to can on them. I use a propane burner outside and a portable hot plate.

edited because I didn't proof read.

Smart thinking on your part asking about canning Katy! I just would have never thought this would be an issue. It's kind of frustrating to be honest.

I just called Sears and talked to a technical specialist and he looked up the recommendations for my stove. It does not recommend that I pressure can on it, which I had no idea would be an issue until you guys mentioned it, and he thought my water bath canner would be fine. He said that weight shouldn't be an issue unless I was canning hundreds of pounds of stuff. I guess I'll just stick with my water bath canner and do only jams and jellies. I'll have to buy a heating element if I do any other canning.

Thanks everyone!
